Transportation Dispatcher- Trucking Department

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedule and dispatch drivers, trucks, and equipment to meet delivery and pickup requirements.
  • Monitor driver routes and provide real-time support to ensure on-time service.
  • Communicate with drivers regarding assignments, route changes, delays, and customer needs.
  • Track vehicle locations and shipment status using transportation management systems and GPS technology.
  • Coordinate load assignments to maximize fleet utilization and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate records of driver logs, trip reports, fuel usage, and transportation documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Hours of Service (HOS) requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Respond promptly to transportation emergencies, breakdowns, accidents, or service disruptions.
  • Work closely with customers, other departments, and drivers to resolve delivery issues and maintain service excellence.
  • Verify load information, delivery schedules, and transportation documentation for accuracy.
  • Monitor driver performance and communicate operational concerns to management.
  • Assist in planning and optimizing routes to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
  • Generate and maintain dispatch reports and operational records.
  • Obtain all permits required to transport equipment.
  • Load and unload equipment as required. 
  • Operate a forklift to pull equipment attachments.
  • Associate degree or equal experience in Logistics, Transportation, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of dispatching, logistics coordination, or transportation experience preferred.
  • Experience in the trucking or freight transportation industry strongly preferred.
  • Some knowledge or experience with heavy equipment is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of transportation operations, routing, and dispatch procedures.
  • Familiarity with DOT regulations, Hours of Service requirements, and transportation compliance standards.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency in transportation management software, GPS tracking systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong problem-solving and customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and attention to detail.
Requirements

  

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.
  • Ability to communicate effectively by phone, radio, and electronic communication systems.
  • Occasional lifting of office materials up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to climb onto machines.

Work Environment

  • Office environment within a transportation or trucking operation.
  • May require occasional evening, weekend, holiday, or on-call availability based on operational needs.
