We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Lead Mechanical Engineer to help shape the future of our engineering organization while leading the development of advanced e-beam systems. This role combines technical leadership with direct engineering execution, offering the opportunity to establish engineering standards, develop scalable processes and SOPs, and build the framework that supports continued company growth.
The ideal candidate is an experienced, self-driven engineer who enjoys mentoring others while remaining actively involved in design, development, manufacturing support, and problem-solving. In this role, you will provide technical direction for mechanical engineering activities related to e-beam systems, drive process improvements, and contribute directly to product development and continuous improvement initiatives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Lead the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of mechanical components and assemblies for e-beam systems.
- Provide day-to-day technical leadership and mentorship to mechanical engineering team members, fostering best practices and professional growth.
- Drive new product development projects from concept through manufacturing release, ensuring technical, schedule, and quality objectives are met.
- Perform and oversee CAD modeling, drafting, engineering documentation, and design reviews.
- Conduct and review tolerance analyses, structural evaluations, and design verification activities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineering, manufacturing, and operations, to ensure successful integration of mechanical systems.
- Serve as the primary mechanical engineering resource for prototype builds, testing, troubleshooting, and production ramp-up activities.
- Identify technical risks and develop practical solutions to support project and business objectives.
- Recommend and implement design improvements that enhance manufacturability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, design practices, SOPs, and documentation processes that support product development and manufacturing scalability.
- Develop, review, and maintain controlled engineering documentation, including drawings, specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), work instructions, and technical procedures.
- Own engineering revision control processes, ensuring design changes are properly documented, reviewed, approved, communicated, and released in accordance with company quality standards.
- Support configuration management activities and maintain document integrity throughout the product lifecycle.
- Support root cause investigations and corrective action requests (CARs) related to product and manufacturing issues.
- Contribute to strategic planning, resource prioritization, organizational development, and continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering and manufacturing environments.
- Help define and evolve the structure, processes, and best practices of the mechanical engineering department as the organization grows.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Proficiency in Autodesk CAD software; Autodesk Inventor experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GD&T, materials selection, thermal management, structural analysis, and mechanical system design.
- Experience working with high-voltage systems and associated safety considerations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and coordinate engineering activities across multiple disciplines.
- Experience developing engineering processes, SOPs, controlled documentation systems, and revision control practices.
- Familiarity with configuration management, engineering change processes (ECO/ECN), and document control systems.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
- Ability to balance leadership responsibilities with hands-on engineering execution.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a proactive, results-oriented approach.
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, small-team environment.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 8+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, preferably within manufacturing, high-tech, vacuum systems, semiconductor equipment, or related industries.
- Prior experience leading engineering projects, mentoring engineers, or serving in a technical lead capacity.
- Advanced proficiency with CAD tools; Autodesk Inventor experience is a plus.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, fabrication methods, assembly techniques, and design for manufacturability (DFM).
- Experience supporting products from concept through production.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to work in manufacturing and production environments as needed.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
