Description

This role contributes to NFPA’s Mission, Vision, and Strategic initiatives by playing a critical leadership role in safeguarding the financial integrity of the organization and supporting organizational decision-making through financial analysis and the proper execution of transactions. This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) financial systems, safeguarding assets, ensuring accurate monthly financials and maintaining fiscal discipline in operating and capital spending across all departments. Provide accounting and financial systems support to all departments along with timely statutory financial reporting of the various audit requirements and preparation of the annual Form 990.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES


Financial Reporting & Accounting:

  • Oversee the accounting, payables, financial system controls, payroll and taxation functions.
  • Establishes operating policies and procedures that affect subordinate department units.
  • Interprets, executes, and recommends modifications to policies.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of the monthly and annual financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow).
  • Maintain integrity of the general ledger and financial systems.
  • Analyzes financial information detailing assets and liabilities and make appropriate entries to ensure the accuracy of the current financial position.

Compliance & Regulatory:

  • Lead the preparation and timely filing the IRS Form 990 return.
  • Lead the preparation and timely filing of the annual audited financial statements for the NFPA
  • Management for the oversight of accurate and timely processing of NFPA’s payroll including tax filings and regulatory compliance. 

Leadership and Business Partnership:

  • Serve as key advisor to the CFO on accounting treatments, sales tax and compliance issues.
  • Partners with department leaders to support financial decision-making and the efficient use of the NetSuite financial systems.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team members.
  • Apply principles of accounting to audited financial information Ensures that accounting systems, processes and controls are in place and procedures are documented and working effectively.
  • Provide actionable financial insights to support organizational initiatives.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or equivalent.
  • 12 or more years of related experience. Prior Controller experience preferred.
  • 3–5+ years progressive experience in a management level role
  • Working knowledge of all standard accounting operating procedures and principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of or willingness to dive deep into federal tax guidelines and tax laws as they relate to not-for-profit organizations.
  • Knowledge of internal controls and risk management
  • Experience with MS Office ( Word, Outlook,) High proficiency with advanced Excel.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning Systems administration ( i.e. NetSuite)
  • Excellent written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, work proactively to problem solve independently and as a collaborative team player.
  • Ability to independently assume responsibility for the overall needs of the Accounting Department.
  • CPA preferred or significant practical experience

Salary ranges at NFPA are set by role and level, based on current competitive market data. Final compensation is determined by a combination of factors, including the specific skills, relevant experience, education, and training you bring to the role, as well as internal equity and business needs. For candidates whose qualifications align well with the role’s requirements and expectations, offers are often made toward the minimum of the posted range. Exceptional qualifications or unique circumstances may result in placement higher in the range. NFPA is committed to fair, competitive pay and offers a strong total rewards package, including comprehensive benefits. Range: $145,706.00 - $247,799.00
