The Security Services Technician is responsible for supporting residential and commercial security services through customer consultation, security assessments, system design, installation, troubleshooting, repair, and ongoing customer support. This position assists with all aspects of the security and home automation process, including recommending appropriate system solutions, completing accurate estimates, installing and maintaining equipment, and ensuring customers understand the operation of their security systems. The Security Services Technician must maintain a strong understanding of security services, low-voltage wiring, surveillance systems, and applicable industry standards, and must be registered alarm employee in the State of North Carolina or achieve registration within the first 30 days of employment.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct security assessments and consult with residential and commercial customers to determine security and surveillance system needs.
- Design customized security plans and provide accurate estimates based on customer needs, building layout, and system requirements.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair security systems, surveillance systems, access control equipment, and related hardware.
- Read and interpret service and repair orders, schematics, technical manuals, specifications, blueprints, and building plans.
- Test installed systems to confirm proper operation and resolve faults or performance issues.
- Educate customers on installed products, service functionality, equipment operation, and basic troubleshooting to support a positive customer experience.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment, materials, service activities, invoices, and contract-related paperwork.
- Access customer service areas, including crawl spaces, attics, confined spaces, elevated work areas, and uneven terrain, to complete installations, repairs, and service-related work.
- Operate and safely use company-issued tools including ladders, testing equipment, laptops, mobile applications, and related equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
- Maintain accountability for assigned inventory, tools, equipment, and returned or unused materials.
- Perform all work in compliance with company policies, operational procedures, service standards, applicable regulations, and safety requirements, including safe driving practices, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), ladder safety, and safe equipment operation.
- Work assigned schedules based on operational and business needs, including rotating on-call responsibilities outside regular business hours, and overtime related to workload demands, service interruptions, outages, or weather-related events.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Maintain regular and timely attendance.
- Perform other duties/special projects as required.
- Participate on behalf of the company in community and company-sponsored activities as requested.
- Attend safety meetings; complete online safety and security trainings; and maintain a safe working environment.
- Actively maintain and enhance job-related knowledge and skills through ongoing professional learning and development.
- Maintain certifications, registrations, and continuing education credits as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Hold status as a registered alarm employee in the State of North Carolina or ability to achieve and maintain status within 30 days of employment.
- Minimum of two years of alarm installation, security system installation, low-voltage wiring, or electrical wiring experience is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and the ability to travel throughout the company’s service area is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency with residential and commercial security systems, surveillance/CCTV systems, access control equipment, home automation, and low-voltage wiring.
- Apply applicable safety practices, building codes, NEC, NFPA standards, and industry best practices to security system installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Interpret and apply construction terminology, blueprints, building plans, wiring diagrams, schematics, service orders, repair orders, technical manuals, and system specifications.
- Proficiency in the use of hand tools, power tools, test meters, diagnostic equipment, security system technology, and standard office technology required to complete daily assignments.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally with customers, coworkers, management, vendors, and other contacts.
- Ability to accurately assess customer needs, recommend appropriate security solutions, explain system options, and demonstrate system operation to end users.
- Apply knowledge of color code, electrical circuitry, construction terminology, and low-voltage principles during system installation and repair.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when installing equipment, troubleshooting system issues, documenting work performed, and maintaining records of materials and equipment used.
- Apply sound judgment to analyze technical information, identify system issues, evaluate alternatives, and resolve problems in a timely and effective manner.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team while maintaining professionalism, safety, and quality customer service.
- Organize, prioritize, and manage daily assignments, service requests, documentation, and follow-up activities in a changing work environment.
- Perform effectively under pressure, adapt to changing priorities, and respond appropriately to emergency service requests, customer concerns, and time-sensitive situations.
Physical Requirements:
- Combination of stationary tasks, such as documentation, system updates, customer education, and regular physical activity, including walking, standing, crouching, kneeling, reaching, bending, and climbing throughout the workday.
- Lift, carry, move, and position tools, equipment, materials, ladders, and security system.
- Use hands and fingers to handle tools, terminate wiring, connect equipment, operate system devices, complete documentation, and perform detailed installation or troubleshooting tasks.
- Safely climb ladders and access elevated work areas, attics, crawl spaces, confined spaces, and other service access areas in accordance with company safety guidelines.
- Reach at or below shoulder level and overhead as needed.
- Maintain balance and coordination while carrying tools or equipment, working on uneven terrain, climbing ladders, or navigating confined work environments.
- Communicate verbally with customers, coworkers, leadership, and other team members.
- Operate a motor vehicle and travel between customer homes, company locations, and other assigned work sites as required by daily assignments.
- Medium physical demand, requiring the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move tools, equipment, materials, or other job-related objects.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed primarily in residential and commercial environments, including customer homes, crawl spaces, attics, confined spaces, construction environments, and other indoor and outdoor service areas.
- Work environments may be poorly ventilated, dusty, damp, dirty, noisy, hot, cold, or humid and may involve exposure to insects, rodents, wildlife, or other environmental conditions commonly associated with residential field work.
- Customer locations and job sites may vary in layout, accessibility, cleanliness, temperature, noise level, and overall working conditions.
- Outdoor work may involve exposure to varied weather conditions, including rain, wind, heat, cold, and humidity.
- Work may occur in uneven terrain, at varying heights, or in elevated or confined work areas.
- Work requires the routine use of hand tools, power tools, ladders, testing equipment, telecommunications devices, laptops, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Travel throughout the company’s service area is required, including operation of a company vehicle in varying traffic, road, and weather conditions.
- All work must be performed in accordance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable safety requirements.
