The Lead I&C Commissioning Technician will play a key role in the commissioning of substation, power plant and well pad equipment across Fervo’s portfolio of geothermal energy developments. The Lead I&C Commissioning Technician will oversee field execution and management of contractors, commissioning timeline, documentation, and unit handovers. The Lead I&C Commissioning position will reside at the project location in Milford, UT during commissioning efforts. This position reports to the Commissioning Manager. This is a hands-on, field-based role where strong leadership, technical expertise, and a collaborative mindset are essential. You will be a core contributor to successful plant startups and long-term performance.
Responsibilities
Commissioning Execution & Field Leadership
- Lead on-site commissioning activities for geothermal production, substation, power plant, and well pad systems, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely energization and turnover
- Operate within Fervo’s hybrid commissioning model by coordinating internal team members, contractors, specialized vendors, and O&M technicians to achieve integrated system readiness
- Coordinate commissioning scopes across engineering, construction, ORC providers, vendors, and O&M teams through daily field meetings and structured progress tracking
- Represent commissioning during project readiness reviews, energization planning, and performance acceptance testing
- Manage, coach, mentor, and advise Fervo employees on commissioning execution, standards, and best practices
Instrumentation & Controls Testing
- Lead functional testing, startup, and performance verification for well pad and I&C systems
- Install, inspect, calibrate, and test field instrumentation, including pressure, temperature, flow, and level devices
- Support and perform loop checks, point-to-point testing, control system I/O verification, and signal validation
- Assist with commissioning and startup of control systems, plant automation, and related field equipment
- Troubleshoot instrumentation, control logic, communications, and system integration issues during commissioning and early operations
Contractor, Vendor & Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, engineering, construction, electrical, mechanical, and O&M teams to resolve commissioning issues and maintain schedule alignment.
- Lead system troubleshooting efforts and coordinate with vendors and engineering teams to resolve technical issues, punch list items, and warranty matters.
- Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and other commissioning teams during startup activities to ensure safe and integrated system operation.
- Support vendor and third-party commissioning scopes within hybrid teams that include both internal and external resources.
Quality, Safety & Documentation
- Enforce quality, safety, and environmental standards from pre-commissioning through handover.
- Proactively identify and mitigate commissioning risks to support compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Organize and lead walkdowns and inspections to verify compliance with commissioning protocols, contract terms, and turnover requirements.
- Maintain accurate commissioning documentation, including loop sheets, calibration records, test results, and turnover packages.
- Ensure management-of-change processes are followed to document deviations from scope and maintain configuration control through turnover.
System Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Oversee system performance testing and initial reliability data collection to validate operational standards.
- Capture lessons learned from commissioning and startup activities to support continuous improvement across future projects.
- Support early operations troubleshooting and reliability improvements following system handover.
- Contribute field insights to improve commissioning frameworks, documentation standards, and execution processes.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in Instrumentation, Controls, Electronics, or equivalent field experience
- 5+ years of experience in power plants, energy, or other complex industrial facilities
- Superior understanding and track record of industrial safety best practices
- Superior understanding of the piping and instrumentation systems
- Proven success with third-party commissioning scopes and vendor activities within hybrid teams that blend internal and external resources
- Deep understanding of plant systems integration and relevant standards/regulations
- Demonstrated experience as an I&C Technician in power generation or industrial facilities
- Proven leadership experience
- Strong understanding of industrial instrumentation and control systems
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and control narratives
- Experience with calibration tools and test equipment
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to execute concurrent commissioning scopes
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and contractor coordination
- A cooperative and collaborative mindset with a demonstrated history of managing highly effective cross functional teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong safety leadership mindset
- Experience with geothermal, power plants, or utility-scale energy facilities
- Familiarity with DCS, PLC, and SCADA systems
- Commissioning or startup experience
- Ability to work independently in a field environment
- Expertise in instrumentation, control systems, and testing requirements/standards
- Advanced knowledge of asset condition monitoring technologies, or the willingness to acquire them, including relevant certifications
- Strong familiarity with commissioning frameworks (NETA ATS & ECS, ASHRAE) and structured document turnover systems
- Project management, commissioning or O&M certifications (e.g., PMP, CxA, CMRP or equivalent)
Location
Fervo Energy is headquartered in Houston, TX with growing offices in Oakland, CA, Golden, CO, Salt Lake City, UT and Reno, NV. This position is located at the Cape Station facility in Milford, UT, with some hybrid work flexibility when commissioning activities are not ongoing. The role involves coordination with construction and commissioning teams and may require extended hours during critical startup periods.
