Description

The Lead Surgical Assistant plays a pivotal role in supporting the oral surgeon during dental and surgical procedures, ensuring a safe, efficient, and comfortable experience for patients. This position is responsible for preparing and maintaining surgical instruments and equipment, assisting during procedures, and upholding the highest standards of patient care. The Lead Surgical Assistant also provides guidance to the clinical team, supporting smooth operations, strict adherence to safety protocols, and optimal patient outcomes.


Essential Responsibilities:

  •  Prepare, sterilize, and maintain all surgical instruments and equipment before, during, and after procedures to ensure a sterile environment.
  •  Escort patients to the operator in a timely, professional manner.
  •  Help patients feel comfortable and informed before, during, and after treatment, addressing questions or concerns as needed.
  •  Assist the oral surgeon during procedures by passing instruments, suctioning, and providing necessary materials.
  •  Prepare patients for surgery, monitor vital signs, and assist with anesthesia administration to ensure patient safety.
  •  Review and verify patient medical history prior to treatment and ensure all records are current and accurate.
  •  Confirm that patients are fully informed and understand the procedures being performed.
  •  Accurately document patient information, surgical details, and updates in the electronic health record (EHR).
  •  Provide post-operative care instructions and coordinate appropriate follow-up after surgery.
  •  Collaborate effectively with the surgical team, providing leadership, guidance, and support as needed.


Additional Responsibilities:

  •  Monitor inventory levels of clinical and surgical supplies and ensure appropriate stock is maintained.
  •  Take dental radiographs as required or instructed, following review of case notes or referrals to ensure high-quality imaging.
  •  Assist with daily and monthly maintenance of sterilization equipment, handpieces, motors, suction systems, traps, and Xray/sensor units.
  •  Maintain a professional, courteous, and cooperative demeanor at all times while representing the practice positively.
  •  Maintain regular attendance and adhere to assigned schedules to ensure consistent coverage for surgical procedures.
  •  Travel between office locations as needed and comply with insurance and travel requirements.
  •  Participate in continuing education to stay current on oral surgery techniques, tools, and safety protocols.
  •  Demonstrate proactive, forward-thinking skills by anticipating the needs of patients and the surgical team to ensure efficient procedures.
  •  Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by management
Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  •  High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a Dental Assistant program preferred.
  •  Maintain all required certifications and renewals in accordance with state regulations.
  •  Current CPR certification required.
  •  Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, sterilization techniques, and patient care protocols.
  •  Excellent manual dexterity and ability to handle surgical instruments with precision.
  •  Minimum of 3–5 years of experience as a surgical assistant, preferably in an oral surgery or dental setting.
  •  Prior leadership or supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
