Status: Part-Time, This position is anticipated to begin as a part-time role. Based on organizational needs, performance, and candidate capacity, the position may have the opportunity to grow into a full-time role in the future. 

Reports To: Facilities Director

Wage:  Wage Scale 5/ $17.20- $25.80 - Based on Experience
Location: Greater Missoula Family YMCA
Schedule: Varied shifts- Primarily nights, weekends based on facility needs
Probation: Subject to introductory/probationary period


Position Summary:


The Custodial & Technician Supervisor is a hands-on working supervisor responsible for helping maintain a clean, safe, functional, and welcoming YMCA facility. This position spends the majority of time on the facility floor supervising custodial operations, completing cleaning tasks, supporting staff, performing basic maintenance, and ensuring YMCA standards are met. Administrative responsibilities are limited and primarily include scheduling, payroll review, hiring support, and staff communication.

The ideal candidate is dependable, self-directed, disciplined, takes initiative, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently while leading by example. This individual works alongside the custodial team, helps solve problems, maintains accountability, and takes pride in the overall appearance and condition of the newly remodeled facility.


 

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily work of the custodial team, primarily during evening and after-hours shifts.
  • Help ensure custodial shifts are appropriately covered and daily cleaning expectations are completed.
  • Provide clear direction to custodial staff and help ensure assigned tasks are completed thoroughly and on time.
  • Train custodial staff on cleaning standards, checklists, safety expectations, chemical use, equipment use, and facility priorities.
  • Monitor custodial checklists, cleaning systems, and assigned areas to ensure consistency and accountability.
  • Provide hands-on custodial support when needed, including covering shifts, assisting with deep cleaning, and helping reset facility spaces.
  • Help identify staffing gaps, performance concerns, supply needs, and training needs.
  • Communicate custodial team needs and concerns to the Facilities Director.
  • Assist with interviewing, hiring, and onboarding custodial staff as needed, with support from the Facilities Director, Human Resources, and YMCA leadership.
  • Help create a positive, accountable, respectful, and productive work environment for custodial staff and maintain the general aesthetic of the facility.
  • Complete regular facility walkthroughs to assess cleanliness, safety, organization, and overall appearance.
  • View the facility through the eyes of the customer and identify areas that need cleaning, repair, improvement, or follow-up.
  • Maintain high standards in locker rooms, restrooms, fitness areas, studios, hallways, program spaces, entrances, and common areas.
  • Identify and address cleanliness concerns quickly, especially in high-traffic and high-visibility areas.
  • Help ensure the YMCA feels clean, safe, cared for, and welcoming for members, families, staff, volunteers, and guests.
  • Report recurring facility concerns, deferred maintenance needs, or systems issues to the Facilities Director.
  • Assist in maintaining organized custodial closets, supply areas, storage spaces, and back-of-house areas.
  • Performing minor repairs and facility upkeep during evening or after-hours shifts including but not limited to:
    • Completing light painting, touch-up work, patching, or simple cosmetic repairs.
    • Assisting with basic plumbing repairs or troubleshooting when locker rooms, restrooms, or program spaces are closed to members.
    • Submitting, tracking, and completing work orders through YMCA systems as assigned.
  • Basic preventative maintenance, specifically Health & Wellness equipments such as weight towers, spin bikes and seat etc.

Qualifications:

 

  • Custodial, facilities, maintenance, janitorial, building operations, or related experience preferred.
  • Previous experience supervising, training, or supporting a team preferred.
  • Ability to work primarily evenings, after-hours, and occasional weekends.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify cleanliness, safety, and facility concerns.
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks with limited direct supervision.
  • Experience with basic maintenance, light repairs, painting, plumbing, fitness equipment, or custodial equipment preferred but not required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with staff and supervisors.
  • Basic computer, scheduling, payroll, or work order system experience preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required or willingness to obtain.
  • Must complete required YMCA trainings, including child abuse prevention and safety-related training.


Working Enviroment & Physical Demands:

 

  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, climb, reach, push, pull, and lift throughout shifts.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally with assistance.
  • Ability to work around cleaning chemicals, custodial equipment, maintenance tools, and wet or humid environments.
  • Ability to work in locker rooms, restrooms, fitness spaces, studios, pool-adjacent areas, mechanical areas, and public spaces.
