Chalet has an opportunity for a Safety Specialist who will ensure the well-being of our 375+ employees. It is the Safety Specialist’s mission to make sure that our staff goes home as good or better than how they started their day. Responsibilities include:

  

  • Employee Health, Well-Being & Safety – Lead our safety initiatives, maintaining and improving our overall safety culture through the development, enhancement and implementation of health, safety, facility and security policies, procedures, and programs in an effort to: raise the level of safety awareness, improve responsiveness, and encourage employee involvement. Responsible for the safety and well-being of all staff including landscapers, horticulturists, retail associates, and professional staff.
  • OSHA Compliance & Workers Compensation – Encourage a supportive and proactive reporting culture, and ensure that appropriate attention is given to determine root causes and implement corrective actions following incidents. Efficiently manage incidents and accidents, including transport when appropriate. Coordinate return to work and light duty assignments. 
  • Training & Leadership – Partner with our Safety Captains and Human Resources Team to create and conduct company-wide trainings in both English and Spanish. Empower Safety Captains.  
  • HR Support – Answer questions, provide information, and share resources to employees as needed. Support our HR Team with onboarding. Foster methods, events and communication that ensure inclusiveness of all staff.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  

  • 2 to 3 years of supervisory experience in a production environment (landscape, warehouse or the like) where you coached/mentored, provided constructive feedback, interviewed, and upheld policies. 
  • A degree or certification in Safety, Human Resources, Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Risk Management, Horticulture, Landscape Management, Environmental Science or a related field is a plus. 
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • This opportunity could have career parallels to your previous employment as a Landscape Project Manager, Facilities Manager, Public Safety Officer, EMT, Volunteer Firefighter, Military Veteran or Security Professional.
  • Possess a balance of being a no-nonsense professional with a trustworthy and caring style that will establish strong and long-term relationships with staff and vendors. 
  • Fast-on-your-feet, organized, accountable, decisive, and able to juggle and manage multiple projects.
  • A confident and effective communicator who utilizes the most appropriate method for the message. Able to conduct training sessions for groups of 5 to 40.
  • Computer literate with abilities in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Interest and ability to obtain OSHA 10 Certification.
  • CPR, First Aid, and/or AED certified a plus.


Work Environment/Logistics:

  • You will be provided with a vehicle for use during working hours to travel amongst our 3 local locations and landscape job sites.
  • Work schedule is Monday through Friday. The ideal candidate will be able to start some mornings at 6 am, and be flexible to have two work stations in both of our offices in Wilmette and North Chicago (near Gurnee).


This position is eligible for our full benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, FSA, HSA, EAP, paid time off, holidays, employee discount, and 401(k) with match. There will be a sign-on bonus for bilingual abilities (fluent in English and Spanish) and the first year salary will be close to $50,000 with lots of room for growth.
