About this Role

The Outpatient Surgery and Observation Coder reviews facility outpatient surgery medical records and facility observation records. The coder works independently is responsible for assigning diagnosis and procedure codes (including observation hours and injections/infusions as necessary) with a high degree of accuracy.


Responsibilities:

  

  • Reviews outpatient medical records to assign ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes accurately for same day surgery and observation accounts
  • Meets and exceeds productivity and quality standards (target is 6.25/hour – SDS, 3.5/hour – OBS)
  • Updates charges (as needed) and processes the records in a timely manner
  • Reviews tasks and corrects codes as necessary

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required with completion of a coding certification program
  • Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree in Health Information Management or similar preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of outpatient coding experience supporting hospital facility coding
  • ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS experience required
  • Coding credential required from AHIMA/AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS)

Additional Skills & Abilities:

  • Has working knowledge of coding guidelines
  • Ability to use independent judgment to manage and impart confidential information
  • Advanced knowledge of medical coding, electronic medical record systems, and coding systems
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and policy compliance issues related to medical coding and documentation
  • Knowledge of current and developing issues and trends in medical coding diagnosis and procedure code assignment
