Summary

The Tax Manager is responsible for managing the company's sales and use tax compliance program as well as supporting income and franchise tax functions. This role owns the end-to-end process for state and local tax filings, coordinates with external tax advisors on income tax matters, maintains the company's registered agent relationships, and ensures timely completion of all domestic and foreign annual report obligations. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented tax professional who works independently, meets every deadline, and communicates proactively with stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities


Sales & Use Tax Compliance

  • Prepare and submit multi-state sales and use tax returns using Wolters Kluwer CCH SureTax; maintain filing calendars across all registered jurisdictions.
  • Submit state sales and use tax payments as directed, including ACH debits and manual remittances.
  • Reconcile tax liability accounts monthly and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Maintain exemption certificate records and respond to audit information requests.
  • Analyze and reconcile sales and use tax data drawn from multiple platforms and legal entities to ensure completeness and accuracy.

Income & Franchise Tax Support

  • Serve as the primary internal liaison with the outside tax firm for federal and state income and franchise tax matters.
  • Gather and deliver supporting documentation for quarterly estimated tax payments, including workpapers and general ledger data.
  • Prepare and review apportionment schedules (sales, payroll, and property factors) for multi-state income tax filings.
  • Coordinate delivery of information packages required for annual income and franchise tax return preparation.
  • Track, review, and respond to state and local tax notices; work with outside counsel to resolve assessments and correspondence.

Registered Agents & Annual Reports

  • Manage registered agent relationships across all domestic states and foreign jurisdictions where the company is qualified to do business.
  • Ensure timely preparation and filing of all domestic and foreign entity annual reports; maintain a centralized due-date and fee log.
  • Coordinate with legal and outside counsel on entity registrations, qualifications, and withdrawals.
  • Review registered agent invoices and process for payment; periodically evaluate vendor agreements.
  • Maintain compliance for the company's international entities, ensuring foreign registrations, statutory filings, and reporting obligations remain current.

General Tax & Compliance

  • Monitor changes to state and local tax laws affecting the company's filing obligations, nexus positions, or tax rates.
  • Support internal and external audits by organizing records and responding to information requests.
  • Assist with special projects including nexus analyses, voluntary disclosure agreements, and tax software enhancements.
  • Document and maintain standard operating procedures and internal controls for all tax compliance processes.
  • Oversee R&D tracking and reporting, including coordinating time-tracking data to support R&D tax credit calculations and documentation.


Qualifications


Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in state and local tax compliance, with strong hands-on experience in multi-state sales and use tax.
  • Proficiency with Wolters Kluwer CCH SureTax or a comparable multi-state sales tax compliance platform.
  • Working knowledge of multi-state income tax apportionment concepts and filing requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating with outside tax advisors and managing multiple concurrent deadlines.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel; comfortable with large data sets, pivot tables, and reconciliations

Preferred

  • CPA license or active CPA candidate.
  • Experience managing registered agent relationships and entity annual report filings across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O).


Work Environment 

This is primarily an office-based or hybrid role. Minimal travel may be required for external advisor meetings or tax conferences.
