Description

Position Summary

To plan, develop and deliver a program for clinical education for the staff of Natchitoches Regional Medical Center and also maintaining a positive relationship with outside educational programs who wish to train at NRMC.


Primary Responsibilities

1. Education Planning and Delivery (75%)

a. Plans, coordinates and implements clinical education for hospital staff.

b. Conducts needs assessment by direct observation, results of quality improvement reviews, performance appraisals, competency assessments, review and analysis of findings of various hospital committees and programs such as Infection Control, Safety Quality Assurance, Risk Management, Policy and Procedures Committee, etc. and consultation with supervisors/managers.

c. Designs educational programs according to outcome of needs assessment as well as those that support education standards of licensing and accrediting bodies. Develops and designs educational materials, tests, audio-video resources

d. Prepares and submits clinical component of hospital education curriculum to be published monthly by the education department.

e. Develops and presents clinical component of new associate orientation which includes the ongoing Preceptor Program for new nursing staff.

f. Provides consultation to departments and individuals who perform an educational function within the hospital such as clinical coordinators and department managers.

g. Provides education programs in meeting nursing and hospital staff continuing education needs for the purpose of relicensure, certification, continued recertification, continued advances clinical competence and other mandatory requirements such as Basic Life Support, Fire Safety, Infection Control, General Safety, etc.

h. Delivers in-services on nursing units, on all three shifts, and to all levels of personnel as needed. Develops on-the-job training programs for the nursing department in consultation with department managers. Delivers training on new equipment, new techniques or procedures.

i. Serves as the liaison between the hospital, schools of nursing and other allied health training programs such as practical nurse, paramedic, laboratory, respiratory, etc, to provide student orientation and assure goals of both hospital and training programs are maintained.

j. Evaluates the effectiveness of orientation, training and education and assures continued effectiveness through quality improvement efforts.

k. Serves as consultant/instructor for a variety of educational programs offered in and for the community.

l. Coordinates and leads the nurse residency program.


2. Staff Competency Assessment Program (15%)

a. Assists Departments with establishing tools for assessing departmental competency.

b. Establishes forms and procedures for assuring that competency is assessed on all staff annually and in response to new equipment, procedures, techniques, etc.

c. Works closely with Human Resources staff to assure that qualification requirements for all jobs are appropriate and serve as a first line screening for competence.

d. Develops, plans and leads the bi-annual skills fair for staff competency for hands on education for all staff at NRMC.


3. Committee Membership/Participation (5%)

a. Serves as active member and attends meetings of the Safety Committee, Policy and Procedures Committee, Quality, Patient Safety, Root Cause Analysis and others.


4. Knowledge and Skill Currency (5%)

a. Attends seminars and workshops and reads texts and periodicals to maintain currency in knowledge, principals, techniques and technology.


Competencies

1. Knowledge of and ability to teach CPR, ACLS, and PALS.

2. Fundamental knowledge of adult learning principles. Fundamental knowledge of TJC and other regulatory standards.

3. Advanced knowledge of the nature of infectious disease, its treatment and prevention.

4. Ability to develop and deliver effective training programs.

5. Ability to communicate orally with others in a collaborative manner.


Supervisory Responsibility

None.


Requirements

Required Education and Experience

1. Current advance license (Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Paramedic, etc.) to practice in the state of Louisiana.

2. Current CPR certification.

3. A minimum of three years of clinical experience required.


Preferred Education and Experience

1. CPR, ACLS, PALS Instructor certification preferred, if not will obtain when hired and class is available.

2. A minimum of one year of teaching or professional training experience preferred.
