A Little About Us

CompareNetworks is a leading global media company for the engineering, life science, laboratory equipment, and pharmaceutical industries. Founded by scientists, CompareNetworks is a leading provider of online B2B marketplaces for the scientific, and healthcare industries. Through multiple brands and a range of products and services, CompareNetworks connects businesses and professionals with the knowledge, and resources they need to succeed.

GlobalSpec, a CompareNetworks brand, is a trusted provider of data-driven industrial marketing solutions. We help companies in the industrial space promote their products and grow their businesses. Every day we provide critical information through our newsletters, webinars and websites to engineers and other technical professionals across the world that keeps them informed and enables comprehensive discovery of industrial parts so that they can solve today’s complex engineering challenges.

About You

• Editorially demanding. You have standards and you hold to them.

• A storyteller first. You believe the best technical content is also compelling narrative.

• A builder. You’re energized by the chance to create something from the ground up, not just manage what already exists.

• Audience-obsessed. You think about the reader first - always - and you use that instinct to push back on anything that serves the brand’s commercial interests at the reader’s expense.

• Comfortable being the face of the brand. You write publicly, speak publicly, and engage authentically in the industries you cover.

• Collaborative without being consensus-dependent. You gather input, make decisions, and move.

The Position

Salary Range: $120 to $140K

The Editorial Director at GlobalSpec is the senior editorial leader for one of the most important industrial media brands in North America. You will own the editorial strategy and output across the manufacturing, electronics, and automation verticals. You will set the voice. You will raise the standards. You will directly lead a team of editors and indirectly shape every piece of content that carries the GlobalSpec name.

Critically, you will also be the bridge between editorial excellence and commercial success -participating in client relationships, shaping the Custom Content Studio, and helping the sales team speak the language of content value with credibility.

Reports to: GlobalSpec Vice President and Managing Director, Location: Remote with travel. This is a full-time, senior role.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Lead Editorial Across Manufacturing, Electronic & Automation

• Define the editorial strategy for GlobalSpec's key channels and creative output, with direct oversight of editors covering key domains and support staff.

• Elevate editorial standards - for yourself, for the team, for the brand. This means clear criteria around accuracy, voice, narrative intent, audience relevance, and all the elements that make excellent editorial resonate with target personas.

• Create featured content, reports, and multimedia for an industrial audience, serving as the brand's expert and ambassador.

• Manage annual editorial calendars across topics, formats, and audiences, while consulting key stakeholders such as sales and marketing teams.

• Ideate, commission, and approve content across channels: newsletters, feature articles, video scripts, podcast treatments, webinars, event coverage, and custom programs.

• Serve as editor of record for the brand's highest-visibility content.

• Recruit, mentor, and develop a team of editors, contributors, and subject matter experts.

2. Build a Brand with Fans, Not Just Visitors

• Develop distinct editorial franchises, such as recurring series or signature offerings, that drive readers to re-engage and share with colleagues.

• Launch and manage an industry advisory board of engineers and technical leaders who contribute expertise, validate editorial direction, and amplify the brand.

• Represent GlobalSpec publicly as the editorial face of the brand. This includes speaking at industry events and conferences, appearing in partner media, and engaging on LinkedIn and in professional communities.

• Conduct research to understand reader needs, validate editorial direction, and equip the sales team with credible data on audience intent.

• Ensure all content is grounded in human expertise -original reporting, proprietary insight, and real-world perspectives that algorithms cannot replicate.

• Help strategize, build agendas, recruit speakers, and participate in live technology-focused events.

• Ensure GlobalSpec's e-newsletters are market-leading publications that drive returning readers and, in turn, repeat customers

3. Oversee the Custom Content Studio

• Co-own the Custom Content Studio from the editorial perspective, along with the commercial content team. This means maintaining clear editorial standards and branding practices that preserve audience trust and brand integrity.

• Analyze the editorial product portfolio to understand product strengths and weaknesses, develop roadmaps, assess market needs, and ensure solutions are customer-focused and high-performing.

• Develop scalable programs with lean, agile workflows for a variety of media types, ranging from custom reports, sponsored research, and technical articles to interview-based case studies, multimedia production, and custom solutions.

• Execute standards for commercial and branded content in accordance with defined editorial policies, including asset quality and audience relevance.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams on unique asset development and promotion strategies to build audience-facing content that reaches target personas based on merit, not platform or paid media.

4. Partner on Commercial & Client Success

• Advise customers and colleagues on editorial mission, thought leadership, and content offerings, as well as promotion and reporting, so they may best engage audiences with their message.

• Collaborate with the sales team to evaluate prospective clients and recommend content programs that serve the audience while also supporting commercial growth.

• Direct customer interviews for low-funnel and purchase-intent content, where editorial participation raises the quality and credibility of the output.

• Drive sales enablement with tools, messaging, and language to speak fluently about GlobalSpec's editorial value to media buyers, marketing directors, and agency planners.

5. Cross-Functional Leadership

• Work closely with audience development, marketing, and product teams to build content that grows and retains a qualified audience.

• Ensure every piece of content is optimized for all mediums: SEO/AEO, social sharing, email, search within GlobalSpec's own platform, and more.

• Collaborate with the website and technology teams to ensure editorial tooling — including CMS, media libraries, and audience segmentation tools — is adapting to evolving digital strategies and customer needs.

• Work with other leaders to integrate cross-functional workflows and knowledge sharing.

• Maintain project management and communications discipline: use shared tools to track assignments, progress, and completion, while keeping key stakeholders informed.

Requirements
  • 15+ years of progressive editorial experience in B2B media, trade publishing, or a closely adjacent content-driven field.
  • At least 5 years in an editorial leadership or management role, ideally overseeing multiple brands, verticals, or a large content team.
  • Deep knowledge of the industrial manufacturing space — electronics, automation, or adjacent engineering disciplines. You don’t have to be an engineer, but you have to be able to talk to one.
  • A genuine editorial point of view — opinions about what makes a story worth telling, what makes content worth reading, and what makes a brand worth following.
  • Proven experience building audience through editorial quality, not just SEO tactics.
  • Experience with custom content, branded content, or content studio operations: setting standards, working with clients, and protecting editorial integrity while supporting commercial goals.
  • A track record of developing editorial talent — you make editors better.
  • Comfort in commercial settings: you can walk into a client conversation, represent the editorial product credibly, and contribute to a sale without becoming a salesperson.
  • Data literacy: you use audience metrics, engagement signals, and content performance data to make editorial decisions.
