The Sam T. Wilson Library in Arlington, Tennessee, is seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative Assistant Director to join our team!

As Assistant Director, you will be a hands-on leader who is not afraid to jump in wherever needed. From supporting daily operations and leading staff to assisting with programming, community engagement, and strategic initiatives, this role is truly an all-hands-on-deck position.
This position reports to, and works closely with, the Library Director in overseeing the operations of the library. This is an ideal position and opportunity for someone with previous success in a supervisory position or an experienced public library librarian.
The Assistant Library Director will present the library to the community in a meaningful and enriching manner that will enhance the patron experience and increase visits and usage.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
- Supports the Library Director in:
- The management of the library team to include hiring, training, scheduling, assigning tasks, motivating, evaluating, and development
- Managing the library Collection
- Supervising and providing leadership for day-to-day operations of the library
- Developing, planning, promoting, and participating in programs and events
- Gathering and maintaining information/data to support periodic and specialized reporting on library success, value and activity
- Managing the library brand through social media
- Writing and implementing program grants
- Providing effective communication on procedures and processes to staff and public
- Assisting with the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures, and processes
- Responding to and resolving patron issues, including account questions and policy enforcement
- Maintaining an attractive, organized, and well-used library, including creating displays, shelving order, providing thoughtful programs and events, and feedback to the Director on the needs of the community
- Working customer service points.
- Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records
- Provides backup to the Library Director as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned
JOB REQUIREMENTS
An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.
- ALA-accredited Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science degree required
- Minimum of (2) two years of public library experience preferred
- Prior experience with Polaris (ILS) strongly preferred
- Experience tracking usage statistics, data collection and excel reports
- Ability to build strong teams and develop staff
- Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills
- Superior customer service skills
- Accommodate a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
- Excellent technical skills, including familiarity with Windows, Microsoft Suite, and knowledge of various technologies
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
- Occasionally lifting of items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds such as files, books, and other materials.
