You'll work closely with the Produce Manager to oversee the vibrant displays and daily operations, while building and maintaining strong relationships with the hardworking local farmers who supply our shelves. This salaried position helps to oversee the purchasing, merchandising, staffing, and inventory management of our produce department as well as providing excellent internal and external customer service. Experience working in a produce department, farmers market, or similar environment is important. Familiarity with a large variety of fruits and vegetables as well as cooking and preparing options would be helpful. Knowledge of organic and commercial growing practices and organic certification regulations a plus. Strong communication and organization skills are required, as well as attention to detail, time management, superior customer service skills, and a sense of humor.
The purpose of this position is to assist the Produce Manager and to act in his/her absence. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise staff
- Train staff to offer prompt, friendly, courteous customer service
- Coordinate tasks and projects so staff are productive at all times cleaning and stocking
- Follow and update opening and closing checklists
- Ensure that all department procedures, including opening and closing procedures are being followed
- Take disciplinary action as needed following established policies
- Assist in scheduling hours for department staff within budget, and review time sheets
- Organize meetings of department staff as needed
- Organize and maintain departmental communication system that encourages staff participation
- Participate in Management Team responsibilities as designated, such as policy development and other team coverage as needed
- Participate in Person in Charge shifts as assigned
Department Operations
- Assure produce is top quality, attractively displayed; replenished, rotated, culled several times daily
- Ensure adequate produce levels for displays, sale items, coolers and regularly stocked items
- Ensure proper shelf tags and sale signs are on shelves and displays
- Ensure accurate, up-to-date price, ingredient, and date labeling of items
- Be aware of restrictions in merchandising organic produce with conventional or non-certified produce
- Understand all prepping procedures for all produce within department
Merchandising
- Plan attractive displays with uniform signage
- Ensure displays are fully stocked, rotated, and fronted to ensure freshness and abundance
- Use color breaks and texture to enhance displays
- Understand seasonality within the produce department as it relates to ad planning and merchandising
- Assist in planning and implementing seasonal programs
Purchasing
- Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery
- Research new products, rotate varieties seasonally
- Research new or alternative sources of supply
- Purchase product to follow the Co-op guidelines (e.g., priority for local and organic products)
- Review invoices for proper pricing and discount accuracy
- Ensure all new items are added into POS before they are put on shelf
Department Maintenance
- Ensure food prep, work area, utensils, equipment and display areas are maintained in sanitary, orderly condition meeting or exceeding health department standards
- Follow USDA and NH State Law regarding the use, labeling, and handling of allergens
- Follow standard Sanitation Operating Procedures schedule including deep cleaning schedules, good health department scores, pest awareness and control, and equipment maintenance
- Ensure proper storage and labeling procedures as per health department and organic standards
- Participate in inventory counts as directed by management
- Monitor temperatures in cooler and cases

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Familiarity and knowledge of current trends in the natural foods industry
- Experience serving the public
