Description

The Texas Tribune is looking for an afternoon/evening visual editor to support the visuals team in producing high-quality visual journalism on stories about politics and public policy across the state. You’ll work on dailies and breaking news on the photo desk, selecting images from original photo assignments and the wire to publish on our website and off-platform. You’ll have the opportunity to work on enterprise stories and collaborate with editors, reporters and independent visual journalists to create compelling stories for our readers.


The candidate will understand that thoughtful and creative visuals on and off the website, which includes digital platforms like Instagram, helps our readers understand and connect to statewide issues. You are someone who thinks about how photos, videos, illustrations and/or design can not only bring a story to life but also makes the journalism better. The candidate will feel comfortable maintaining high editorial standards, planning visual directions and supporting freelancers in the field. The visuals editor is motivated by curiosity, guided by empathy and committed to collaboration.

This position reports to Pu Ying Huang, the director of visuals.


Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with editors, reporters, news partners and visual journalists on producing visuals for Tribune stories 
  • Commission assignments with freelance photographers and other visual creatives
  • Proficiency in selecting the best images on the photo desk, which includes the navigating archival and wire selections 
  • Develop and execute on visual direction for enterprise/investigative stories 
  • Work with editors and reporters to adapt our visual journalism to platform-native formats to engage audiences like Instagram
  • Support visual products on and off-platform, including social media, newsletter and event production 
  • Help manage the Tribune photo archive and coordinate licensing inquiries  
  • Bring fresh ideas about how the Tribune can show up in digital spaces thoughtfully and authentically. 
  • Contribute to a visually-literate culture in the newsroom and out 
  • Track visual impact and help reinforce department operations 
Requirements


  • Skills in photojournalism, illustrations, art direction, video work or interactive design. 
  • Strong news judgement and understanding of visual storytelling while working under deadline
  • Exemplary organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fact-paced newsroom 
  • Collaborative communication across the newsroom and with our newsroom partners
  • Thrives working on a close-knit team  
  • Some experience in planning, coordinating and executing visual art direction of stories 
  • Technical skills with Adobe Creative Suite products (Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere) Photo Mechanic, Figma, CSS is recommended 
  • Desire to learn and grow in this role 
  • Experience in the news industry is preferred but we're willing to consider the right entry-level candidate

Schedule

The schedule for this role includes 5 days from 1pm - 9pm. 

This will include a partial weekend shift of either Sunday - Thursday or Tuesday - Saturday.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by The Texas Tribune Guild / Media Guild of the West TNG-CWA #39213. Your employment will be subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the applicable collective bargaining agreement between The Texas Tribune and the Guild, as may be amended by the parties from time to time

Salary Description
The minimum is $62,000.
