Title: Staff Accountant
Reports to: Director of Finance
Employment Information: Full time, 12-month non union position
Job Summary
The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing a wide range of accounting functions to support the financial operations of the school. This position maintains accurate financial records, assists with month-end and year-end closing processes, processes accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, reconciles accounts, supports audits, and helps ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and school financial requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform duties in all areas of accounting for the school
- Process billing, verify and/or complete receivable collections.
- Process invoices, verify and / or complete vendor invoice payments.
- Post transactions and categorize records in the general ledger
- Performs month and year end close of assigned areas.
- Process bank deposits, record banking transactions, and reconcile bank accounts.
- Assist with annual financial audits and other compliance reviews as needed.
- Comply with federal, state, local and school policies, procedures and regulations.
- Support compliance with state and federal funding requirements.
- Collaborate with school employees, administrators and external agencies regarding billing and financial matters.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information.
Qualifications and Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. An Associate's degree with at least three years of progressively responsible accounting experience may be considered.
- Minimum of two years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, educational, governmental, or public-sector environment.
- Experience with SAGE MIP or other accounting software preferred. Ability to learn new financial systems quickly
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn American Sign Language (ASL)
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to details and accuracy.
- Understanding of and the ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office with exceptional knowledge of Excel and Excel based programs.
- Ability to analyze financial data and identify discrepancies.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Commitment to excellent customer service when working with staff, vendors, school districts, and outside agencies.
