Description

Position Objective:

To communicate about and promote PETA's regulatory toxicology work with both lay and scientific audiences 


Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Conduct independent online research and analyze technical documents

• Draft news releases, blog posts, newsletters, website text, social media content (e.g., Twitter or LinkedIn posts), and other materials for both a technical and lay audience

• Maintain expertise in non-animal testing methods 

• Maintain a detailed understanding of the department's ongoing projects sufficient to communicate them to the public and to identify relevant news articles

• Draft text about the department's ongoing work and victories and keep it organized for sharing with donors and the public

• Conduct regular reviews of the news to identify articles, social media posts, and scientific publications relevant to PETA's regulatory toxicology work

• Coordinate between PETA scientists and other PETA departments to ensure the timely completion of projects that are both interesting and factually accurate 

• Contribute to the written content of the PETA website and the PETA International Science Consortium website

• Draft letters and e-mail responses to inquiries from the media, donors, and the public 

• Draft soundbites for media interviews

• Coordinate the development of graphics to use on webpages or social media

• Proofread and edit science publications, PowerPoint presentations, letters, and other public communications 

• Attend regular departmental and organizational calls 

• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor 

Requirements

• Advanced degree in a science field

• Experience working in the media or a writing field 

• Excellent knowledge of English grammar, proofreading skills, and the ability to write with creativity and technical accuracy

• Ability to understand and interpret technical scientific information

• Knowledge of toxicology testing methods 

• Ability to establish priorities and apply knowledge in a time-pressured, deadline-intensive environment 

• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

• Effective written and verbal communication skills

• Familiarity with social media platforms and PowerPoint

• Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of scientists and media representatives

• Excellent decision-making skills and the proven ability to take initiative and exercise independent judgment 

• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times

• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
