Position Summary:

The Inventory Coordinator owns the flow of donations from the moment they arrive to the moment they reach the sales floor, and helps grow and steward the store's donor base. The Inventory Coordinator also serves as the supervisor in charge when both the Senior Manager and the Sales & Merchandising Specialist are out, and acts as a keyholder, opening and closing the store, including cash handling and end-of-day procedures.


This is a hands-on role for someone who likes order, takes pride in a smooth, efficient back room, and is a natural at leading a team. The Inventory Coordinator keeps donations moving, prices goods according to guidelines set by the Sales & Merchandising Specialist, and helps keep the floor well-stocked. 


Schedule: The Inventory Coordinator is a full-time position (40 hours/week) located at the Asheville Humane Thrift Store. This position has fluctuating working hours depending on scheduling and store needs, and may require weekend availability.


Compensation & Benefits: The compensation for the Inventory Coordinator is $18.00/hour. Key Responsibilities:

 

Donations & Intake

  • Ensure a positive experience for donors and support donor cultivation, helping grow the volume and quality of incoming donations.
  • Receive, sort, and assess donated items for quality and salability, routing them to pricing, the floor, recycling, or disposal.
  • Keep intake and back-room areas clean, organized, and safe.
  • Coordinate furniture donation pickups and assist with related customer inquiries.
  • Lead and collaborate with the Clothing Lead on clothing intake and processing.

Inventory & Stock Flow

  • Own the movement of merchandise from intake to the sales floor, pricing items per store guidelines and flagging questions or unusual items to the Sales & Merchandising Specialist.
  • Monitor stock levels and coordinate with the Sales & Merchandising Specialist to keep the floor full and shoppable.
  • Track backstock and maintain accurate records of inventory flow and donation volume.
  • Flag high-value or specialty items for pricing by the Sales & Merchandising Specialist.

Team Support

  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource on intake and inventory processes, guiding and coaching associates and volunteers.
  • Set the pace and standard for the team during shifts, including phone communications and customer service.
  • Support the floor and customer service as needed during busy periods.
  • Open and close the store as a keyholder, including cash handling and end-of-day procedures.
  • Act as supervisor in charge when the Senior Manager and Sales & Merchandising Specialist are both out — making day-to-day decisions, handling escalations, and supervising staff/volunteers per AHS policy and applicable law.
  • Collaborate with the Store Manager and Sales & Merchandising Specialist on pricing policies, promotions, and event/marketing needs.
  • Report safety, cleanliness, or organizational issues in intake and processing areas to the Store Manager immediately.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required; must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; self-motivated and able to run a steady operation independently.
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and guide staff and volunteers positively, with sound judgment to run the store independently when the Senior Manager and Sales & Merchandising Specialist are both away.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move merchandise up to ~50 lbs, including bending, reaching, and carrying.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive a cargo van.
  • Comfort with point-of-sale systems, cash handling, and opening/closing procedures.
  • Strong customer-service skills and professionalism, with the ability to work in a busy retail environment and interact with the public throughout the day.
  • Reliable and punctual, with availability for regular or rotating weekend shifts.
  • Ability to make both collaborative and independent decisions.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population and maintain effective, harmonious working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a thrift, resale, warehouse, stockroom, or retail back-of-house setting.
  • Familiarity with donation intake, sorting, inventory, or pricing second-hand goods.
  • A genuine connection to animal welfare or nonprofit mission work.
