Description

Responsible for administration and oversight of Marketing and Communications function and success. In close consultation with the Sr. Director of Marketing and Communications - plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates library marketing, communications, public relations, and community programming initiatives. Responsible for leading the creation and development of multiple topics and categories to be featured on websites and in printed materials.


This is a full-time, exempt position with a starting salary of $93,007, plus excellent benefits


Job Duties (Essential Functions)

  1. Manages a multifaceted department, including: managing budgets and ensuring compliance with procurement and other financial policies; supervising staff and conducting performance reviews; establishing departmental procedures and work routines; and ensuring successful and timely completion of projects, etc.
  2. Acts as backup to Sr. Director of Marketing & Communications ensuring continuity of program function and success.
  3. Develops outcome based, mission driven marketing and programming initiatives, and evaluates efforts to determine effectiveness.
  4. Acts as first point of contact with news media and coordinates Library’s work with the media. Develops relationships with local and national media to promote Library services. 
  5. Develops marketing strategies, action plans and programs for system-wide public information, promotion, and publications.
  6. Assumes overall responsibility for marketing all Library programs and services, internally and externally.
  7. Ensures promotion of Library programs and exhibits through onsite signage and external marketing.
  8. Supervises a project manager, digital content specialist, graphic design and writing teams. 
  9. Undertakes special projects as assigned and works closely with the Project Managers from various departments.
  10. Plan and coordinate design of publications and marketing materials, produced by internal staff and external contracted services, to ensure appropriate promotion and awareness of Library products and services, including graphic design and signage.
  11. Design and direct public relations efforts to achieve marketing goals in terms of image and communication to the Library’s various public audiences with significant emphasis placed on media and internal relations.
  12. Contributes to the Library website’s design, development, and updates, working closely with the Digital Branch Manager, sharing feedback to improve website. 
  13. Build a sense of teamwork and cooperation within the Marketing and Web Design teams and other library staff.
  14. Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in profession.
Requirements
  1. Demonstrated commitment to fulfilling the mission of the Kansas City Public Library.
  2. Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with staff and public in a large public service organization.
  3. Demonstrated team management skills, including the ability to organize work effectively, lead and direct personnel, and plan and execute programs and activities. 
  4. Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of marketing, communications, and public relations.
  5. Considerable knowledge of media communication techniques and publications.
  6. Demonstrated experience with the design and execution of targeted cultural, academic or community programming initiatives for various audiences and groups.
  7. Superior writing and public speaking ability.
  8. Proven skills in goal identification and achievement; strategic planning and organization of multiple projects.
  9. Advanced computer skills related to the position, including but not limited to mastery of Microsoft Office Suite.
  10. Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages used in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.  

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree marketing, communications, business administration or another field with over 6 years of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Over 5 years experience supervising a marketing team.
  • Other equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Work Environment

Work is performed at the Library’s Administrative Annex and Library Branches throughout the district. Primary workspace is shared with co-workers in an office environment, other work will be performed in a public space amongst staff and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
