Summary/Objective
The Tax Manager (indirect & direct tax) is responsible for all aspects of the Company’s tax function, including Sales & Use Tax, Personal Property tax, and Income Tax across multiple jurisdictions.
This role supports all OnPoint Group companies nationwide and reports to the Corporate Controller. The Tax Manager will oversee compliance, planning, audit management, and system integration for both indirect and direct taxes. This includes partnering with finance, accounting, payroll, and business unit leaders to advise on tax matters, optimize tax positions, and mitigate risk.
In a private equity-sponsored environment, this role will also support transaction readiness, tax related due diligence and integration of acquisitions, and enhanced reporting requirements to executive leadership and investors.
Core Job Duties
Leadership & Oversight
- Lead and develop the Tax team, ensuring accurate and timely deliverables across all tax disciplines.
- Establish scalable processes and controls to support growth and acquisition activity.
- Partner with executive leadership on tax strategy, reporting, and risk management.
Sales & Use Tax (Indirect Tax)
- Manage multi-jurisdictional monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax filings.
- Review indirect tax accruals, reconciliations, and taxability determinations.
- Oversee exemption certificate management and nexus compliance.
- Coordinate activities with business unit financial leadership and team
- Coordinate activities of all third-party providers where applicable.
- Monitor legislative changes and ensure timely compliance.
Personal Property Tax
- Manage all aspects of personal property tax compliance, including filings, renditions, and assessments across jurisdictions.
- Maintain fixed asset data alignment with tax reporting requirements.
- Coordinate activities with business unit financial leadership and team.
- Review assessments and pursue appeals where appropriate to minimize tax exposure.
Income Tax
- Coordinate the outsourcing and preparation and review of federal, state, and local income tax filings, working with external advisors as needed.
- Liaise with individual investors, PE Sponsor and third-part tax advisers regarding K-1s, tax distributions and other related communications.
- Support tax provision (ASC 740), including income tax expense, deferred taxes, and related disclosures.
- Manage estimated payments, extensions, and intercompany tax considerations.
- Identify and implement tax planning strategies to optimize effective tax rate.
Audit & Compliance
- Lead all tax audits (sales tax, property tax, and income tax) and manage relationships with tax authorities and external advisors.
- Track and resolve tax notices, assessments, and disputes through closure.
- Ensure proper documentation, record retention, and audit readiness across all tax types.
Systems, Process & Controls
- Evaluate and enhance ERP and tax systems to ensure accurate reporting and compliance.
- Implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
- Ensure alignment between accounting systems, fixed asset systems, and tax reporting requirements.
Private Equity & Strategic Initiatives
- Support due diligence and tax structuring for acquisitions and divestitures.
- Lead tax integration efforts for newly acquired businesses.
- Provide tax insights to support EBITDA optimization and cash flow planning.
- Assist with lender and investor reporting requirements related to tax matters.
Advisory & Cross-Functional Support
- Provide tax guidance to internal stakeholders on transactions, contracts, and operational decisions.
- Deliver tax training to minimize risk and improve compliance across the organization.
- Collaborate with finance and accounting on 1099 reporting and other compliance items.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has supervisory responsibilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
- Must have tax experience, minimum 10 years. This includes:
- Strong Sales & Use Tax background
- Experience with Personal Property Tax and Income Tax
- Experience in a multi-entity, multi-state environment (private equity or high-growth preferred).
- Experience managing external tax advisors and audits.
- Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills.
- The selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check and drug screen.
