Description

The CDL Inter-Facility Driver / Yard Switcher is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods between company-owned storage locations, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities in Burlington, NC. This position requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and supports production operations by ensuring timely material movement and trailer management while maintaining compliance with DOT regulations, company policies, and safety standards.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Transportation and Material Movement

  • Safely operate commercial motor vehicles on public roads between company-owned facilities, warehouses, and storage locations.
  • Transport raw materials, work-in-process inventory, packaging materials, and finished goods between company sites.
  • Move and position trailers at docks, warehouses, and staging areas to support production and shipping schedules.
  • Coordinate deliveries and material transfers with production, warehouse, and logistics personnel.
  • Verify material transfers and ensure loads match transfer documentation.
  • Secure loads properly and ensure compliance with all transportation safety requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of material movements and transfers.

Yard and Trailer Management

  • Spot, stage, relocate, and position trailers as needed.
  • Ensure trailers are available at designated docks for loading and unloading.
  • Verify trailer identification and maintain trailer location records.
  • Assist with trailer inventory management and yard organization.

Shipping, Receiving, and Inventory Support

  • Load and unload materials as required.
  • Receive and verify materials against transfer documents and inventory records.
  • Utilize scanners, inventory systems, and company software to document material movements.
  • Follow FIFO (First-In, First-Out) inventory procedures.
  • Assist with inventory organization, cycle counts, and warehouse housekeeping.
  • Support warehouse operations during periods of increased activity.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate forklifts, clamp trucks, pallet jacks, yard tractors, and other powered industrial equipment as authorized.
  • Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of company vehicles and trailers.
  • Complete daily equipment inspection checklists.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, vehicle issues, and unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance activities as directed.

Safety and Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with all DOT regulations, company policies, and transportation requirements.
  • Maintain a valid Class A CDL and DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • Perform required vehicle inspections and complete all required documentation.
  • Follow all site-specific traffic patterns and operating procedures.
  • Wear required PPE and adhere to all safety rules and regulations.
  • Report accidents, injuries, near misses, unsafe conditions, and equipment concerns promptly.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
  • Support compliance with company quality standards and continuous improvement initiatives.

Additional Duties

  • Assist with general logistics, warehouse, and material handling functions as required.
  • Provide support to production operations by ensuring materials are delivered accurately and on time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements

  

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.


Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
  • Current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate required or ability to obtain and maintain.
  • Acceptable driving record and ability to meet company insurance requirements.
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification required.


Experience

  • Minimum one to three years of CDL driving experience preferred.
  • Experience transporting trailers and materials between facilities preferred.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing, warehousing, shipping, receiving, or logistics environment preferred.
  • Experience operating forklifts and other powered industrial equipment preferred.


Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to read and understand shipping documents, inventory records, and operating procedures.
  • Basic computer skills and experience using scanners or inventory management systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to be cross-trained in other logistics and warehouse functions.


Schedule

  • Full-time position.
  • Overtime and schedule flexibility may be required to support operational and production needs.

  • Successfully complete all company vehicle and equipment training programs.
  • Maintain a valid CDL and DOT medical certification.
  • Comply with all DOT regulations and company driving policies.
  • Wear steel-toed footwear and required PPE at all times.
  • Complete pre-trip, post-trip, and daily equipment inspections.
  • Adhere to all motorized equipment operating procedures.
  • Follow safe lifting, material handling, and trailer switching practices.
  • Maintain compliance with all company safety rules and regulations.
