Job Summary
Evaluates and makes decisions on complex residential and consumer loan applications, applying expert knowledge of portfolio and investor guidelines, internal policies, and regulatory requirements. Exercises advanced credit judgment to balance risk management with sound lending decisions while providing support to internal team members throughout the loan process.
Essential Job Functions
- Serve as a resource for junior underwriters and lending staff by providing mentorship, training, and second-level reviews as needed.
- Review and underwrite mortgage and consumer loan applications, including complex transactions, within delegated authority and analyze credit, income, assets, appraisals, title work, and supporting documentation to determine loan eligibility.
- Ensure compliance with internal lending policies, investor and Government-Sponsored Enterprise (GSE) guidelines, applicable federal and state regulations, bank policies, and Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) requirements,; including verifying transactions and account balances, and all related consumer regulatory requirements.
- Issue loan approvals, suspensions, or denials with clear supporting conditions or reasons.
- Maintain current knowledge of underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and industry trends to support sound lending decisions and risk management.
- Collaborate with loan officers, processors, and other team members to resolve underwriting issues and ensure timely loan decisions and maintain accurate, complete, and audit-ready loan documentation.
- Respond to internal and external audits and quality control reviews by providing required documentation and information.
- Support continuous improvement of underwriting processes by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Promote a strong risk and compliance culture by following policies, identifying potential issues, and supporting consistent risk mitigation practices.
- Stay current on Bank products, services, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements through ongoing training and application in daily work.
Qualifications, Experience, and Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field preferred.
- FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and/or VA Staff Appraisal Reviewer/Lender Appraisal Processing Program (SAR/LAPP) certification preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of mortgage underwriting experience with strong knowledge of agency and investor guidelines, residential and consumer loan products, banking regulations, lending compliance, and credit, income, asset, and collateral analysis.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills, with the ability to explain underwriting decisions, mentor underwriting and lending staff, and maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with loan origination systems (LOS), automated underwriting systems (AUS), and Microsoft Office applications,
- The ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing business needs, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.
