Description

Austin PBS seeks an experienced Producer to support two flagship programs:

  • Austin InSight – Austin PBS's weekly news and public affairs program.
  • Overheard with Evan Smith – Austin PBS's long-running interview series featuring prominent leaders, thinkers, and cultural figures.

The Producer will contribute to all phases of content development, production, post-production, and digital distribution for both programs while supporting other station productions as needed. Candidates should be comfortable working in a high-pressure, collaborative, and creative environment. Applicants should demonstrate a background in television, journalism, and/or digital production, as well as a mastery of a subset of the required skills. The ideal candidate has a background in television news and experience in all aspects of producing television shows and online video content. The Producer will report to the Director of News & Public Affairs and will work closely with the VP of Production. At Austin PBS, you’ll do meaningful work with a team of passionate coworkers. You will also work on other award-winning shows and special productions and events. We offer a supportive and collaborative work environment. 


Role & Responsibilities:

For Austin InSight

  • Research, develop, and write topical news stories.
  • Pitch, book, and coordinate interviews with newsmakers and subject-matter experts.
  • Develop interview questions and story treatments.
  • Collaborate with graphic designers to create supporting visuals and data-driven graphics.
  • Identify and gather visual assets to support storytelling.
  • Assist with publishing content on digital platforms, including the website, YouTube, and social media channels.
  • Log footage, write scripts, and work with editors through post-production.

For Overheard with Evan Smith

  • Work closely with Host to book and coordinate nationally recognized guests.
  • Coordinate studio logistics and guest scheduling.
  • Collaborate with production staff on taping day logistics
  • Direct and manage studio recordings, including communication with control room personnel and talent.
  • Work with editors to complete final programs for broadcast and digital distribution.

Other Responsibilities

  • Produce news and public affairs special studio productions.
  • Manage productions from concept through delivery.
  • Help coordinate scheduling of studio facilities, personnel, and equipment.
  • Maintain production files, releases, and records.
  • Collaborate with Programming, Marketing, Digital, and Social Media teams.
  • Cultivate relationships with community organizations, nonprofits, public agencies, and media contacts.
  • Repurpose and publish archival content for digital platforms.
  • Support additional Austin PBS productions as assigned.
Requirements

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, video, photography or other similar related fields (or the equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Five years of experience in television producing, news gathering, or relevant field.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Knowledge of television production concepts, principles, methodology, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of professional production and post-production procedures, techniques, and standards in a non-linear production environment.
  • Exhibit an understanding of public media mission and values.
  • Creative decision-making skills
  • Ability to deal and interact with nationally-known guests (Presidential candidates, Oscar winners, et cetera) as well as local figures.
  • Informed in a wide range of topics beyond current events, including culture, government and public policy.
  • Personal integrity, fairness, and the credibility needed to gain trust across all levels of an organization.
  • Comfort with teleconferencing software like Zoom or Google Meet.
  • Proficient with Google Workspace tools.
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Cloud tools.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. 
  • Ability to work non-standard hours (night, weekends) as necessary.
