MEDICAL ASSISTANT
Description

I. BASIC FUNCTION:


The Medical Assistant (MA) supports the delivery of high-quality, team-based primary care within the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) model. Working collaboratively with providers, nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members, the MA plays a central role in patient rooming, preventive care, chronic disease management, population health activities, and quality gap closure. This position contributes directly to the achievement of organizational quality metrics, including Uniform Data System (UDS), Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), and value-based care objectives.



II. INTRADEPARTMENTAL RELATIONSHIPS:


Department Officer: Chief Operations Officer


Reports to: Manager of Clinical Support-RN and/or Lead Medical Assistant


Supervises: None



III. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Supports the team-based care model through active participation in pre-visit planning, daily huddles, and care team communication to ensure patients receive coordinated, proactive care.


2. Review preventive health maintenance requirements, complete screenings, identify care gaps, assist with panel management activities, and support achievement of organizational quality metrics including UDS and HEDIS measures.


3. Obtain, verify, and document patient health history, vital signs, medications, allergies, preferred pharmacy, preventive health information, and other pertinent clinical data in the electronic health record (EHR).


4. Administer immunizations and medications per standing orders and provider direction, in accordance with organizational protocols.


5. Perform point-of-care testing (POCT), EKGs, phlebotomy, and other clinical procedures as directed by the provider and organizational standing orders.


6. Coordinate referrals, prior authorizations, follow-up testing, and care coordination tasks as assigned to ensure continuity of patient care.


7. Schedule follow-up appointments and assist patients with care navigation and resource linkage as appropriate.


8. Maintain clinical spaces in a safe, clean, and compliant manner by following infection prevention practices, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, vaccine storage


requirements, and organizational safety policies.


9. Demonstrates culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and patient-centered communication with patients, families, and care team members.


10. Demonstrates effective time management skills and maintain productivity expectations within the clinical workflow.


11. Collaborate effectively with providers, nurses, behavioral health staff, care coordinators, pharmacists, and other interdisciplinary team members to support whole-person care.


12. Utilize standing orders, protocols, and pre-visit planning processes to support preventive care, chronic disease management, gap closure activities, and achievement of organizational quality goals.

13. Perform duties with the MA scope of practice consistent with organizational policies, provider delegation, and applicable state and federal regulations.



IV. PERIODIC DUTIES:


1. Participates in Health Center staff problem solving groups.


2. Attends and participates in department meetings, etc.


3. Performs other duties as assigned.



V. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:


Inside Health Center: All inclusive.


Outside Health Center: Patients/Clients, students, vendors, community health agencies, hospitals, insurance companies, Medicare/Medicaid, physician offices, etc.

VII. QUALIFICATIONS:


1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.


2. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.


3. Current, active Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent) preferred; candidates without certification are eligible and encouraged to apply.


4. Certification must be obtained within 12 months of hire if not held at time of employment (per Certification Acknowledgement and Agreement form).


5. Prior clinical experience in a primary care, FQHC, or community health setting preferred.


6. Experience with EHR systems preferred; Epic or similar EHR experience a plus.


7. Ability to perform clinical procedures including vital signs, phlebotomy, POCT, immunizations, EKGs, and medication administration under delegation.


8. Strong written and verbal communication skills with patients, families, and care team members.


9. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment.


10. Basic computer literacy and aptitude for EHR documentation.

VIII. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



1. Ability to sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.


2. Ability to use hands and fingers for repetitive tasks, including typing, charting, and handling medical instruments.


3. Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 25-50 pounds as needed to assist patients and handle medical supplies or equipment.


4. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate medical equipment, administer injections, perform venipuncture, and enter data into electronic health records.


5. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to perform essential medical assistant functions and communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff.

IX. CONFIDENTIALITY:


Respect for and maintenance of client and staff confidentiality is required. The employee must comply with all applicable federal and state privacy regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), in all aspects of client care, communication, and recordkeeping within the school-based health setting.
