Registered Nurse - Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
This position is PRN for our Extended (Overnight) Shift
What You’ll Do
· Monitor vital signs and assess cardiac status and fluid volume, airway patency, and wounds/drains.
· Implement and sign off on physician post-operative orders.
· Demonstrate awareness of patients’ concerns and a willingness to address them.
· Ensure patient safety and comfort while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
· Observe pertinent changes in symptoms of the patient’s condition, take appropriate action, and report to the physician.
· Document all nursing interventions in the patient’s chart.
· Perform narcotic count at the beginning and end of each working day and maintain accurate records of narcotics dispensed in the narcotic logbook.
· Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
· Complete necessary post-operative teaching of the patient and family.
· Clean and restock all areas at the end of the day.
· Assist with updating printed material (e.g., surgeon’s post-op orders, discharge instructions).
· Perform overnight/23-hour observation of extended stay patients, ensuring continuous monitoring, timely intervention, and thorough documentation across the extended recovery period.
· Manage and reassess pain control, hydration, nutrition, mobility, and elimination needs throughout the extended stay to support patient recovery.
· Conduct discharge readiness assessments using established criteria (e.g., stable vital signs, controlled pain, tolerating fluids, ambulation, and voiding) prior to release.
· Coordinate discharge planning with the physician, patient, and family, including review of post-operative instructions, medications, follow-up appointments, and home care needs.
- Current state licensure as Registered Nurse.
- Minimum of one-year Perioperative experience, critical care and/or outpatient experience preferred.
- Ability to verbalize understanding of the nursing process; assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Has knowledge and understanding of physical and emotional disease processes, clinical nursing skills, and administration of medications.
- Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- PACU and Extended Stay nurses must have Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) in addition to Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Other duties as assigned as necessary and may vary at times, as needed, by your immediate supervisor or as directed by the company.
- Extensive mobility (walking and standing) while performing duties. Periodic pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients and/or equipment. May have exposure to patients with communicable diseases. May have exposure to hazardous equipment or agents
