Part Time Fleet Specialist

The Fleet Specialist supports the Fleet Coordinator and Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the organization's vehicle fleet. This role ensures that all vehicles are well-maintained, compliant with regulations, and efficiently utilized to support the mission of SALT Outreach.  This position also performs Outreach duties as assigned.    

Responsibilities and Duties:

Fleet Operations & Logistics:

  • Work weekend and special event outposts as assigned.    
  • Assist with vehicle scheduling and tracking to meet program needs and ensure timely transportation for staff, volunteers, and clients.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate vehicle logs, mileage records, and fuel usage reports.
  • Assist in monitoring fleet utilization and recommend adjustments for efficiency.

Vehicle Maintenance & Compliance:

  • Assist with scheduling and tracking preventive maintenance and repairs, working with vendors and service providers.
  • Assist with ensuring all vehicles comply with local, state, and federal transportation regulations.
  • Conduct routine inspections to ensure vehicles are in safe operating condition.
  • Assist with maintaining up-to-date records of vehicle registrations, insurance, and inspections.

Driver Coordination & Safety:

  • Communicate with the Fleet Coordinator and Manager and ensure staff are operating vehicles properly.
  • Assist with investigating and documenting any accidents, incidents, or safety concerns and report them to the Fleet Manager.

Administrative & Support Duties:

  • Assist in identifying cost-saving opportunities for fleet operations.
  • Provide reports on fleet performance, expenses, and operational challenges.

Outreach and Support (Outposts):

  1. Work outposts and special events as assigned.
  2. Provide all outreach services, including registration, mail, laundry, showers, charging stations, clothing, and hygiene products.                                                                                     
  3. Build trusting relationships with homeless individuals by offering empathy, compassion, and nonjudgmental support.
  4. Assist with preparing supplies for outreach events at different locations.
  5. Assist in food/supply distribution, hand out clothing (socks, underwear, shoes, etc.), create snack bags, and distribute hygiene items (deodorant, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, etc.).
  6. When delivering services and resources to the unsheltered, adhere to all policies and procedures.
  7. Assist with guiding, directing, and creating relationships with volunteers as applicable.
  8. Ensure cleanliness of trailers used at various outpost locations.  
Requirements

 

  1. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  2. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fleet management, transportation logistics, or a related field.
  3. Strong knowledge of vehicle maintenance, fleet operations, and regulatory compliance.
  4. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  5. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.  Ability to drive large vehicles and pull trailers; CDL is a plus.
  6. Commitment to the mission of serving the homeless and unsheltered communities.

Preferences 

  1. Experience working with the homeless community

Physical Requirements

  • Physical ability to lift to 100 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying

objects 

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Must hear and see well (either naturally or with correction)
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, push, pull, and reach overhead
  • A considerable amount of time making repetitive motions
  • Ability to function with frequent temperature changes between indoors and out
  • Work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain
  • Stand and walk continuously for up to 8-10 hours during a shift while providing customer care
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interactions with customers
  • Attend meetings and collaborate with team members when needed
