Job Summary

 Provide expert nutritional guidance and support to our Head Start children, families, and staff. The Registered Dietitian will be responsible for developing and implementing nutrition policies, providing individualized nutrition assessments and counseling, planning menus that meet nutritional standards, and educating staff and families on healthy eating practices to promote lifelong wellness


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments for children with identified nutritional concerns, special dietary needs, or health conditions
  • Develop individualized nutrition care plans in collaboration with parents/guardians, health staff, and other relevant team members
  • Monitor children's nutritional status and growth, making recommendations for interventions as needed
  • Provide nutrition counseling and education to parents/guardians on topics such as infant feeding, picky eating, healthy meal planning, and managing food allergies or intolerances
  • Develop and review program menus to ensure they meet Head Start Performance Standards, USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines, and the nutritional needs of young children
  • Collaborate with kitchen staff to ensure menus are implemented effectively and efficiently
  • Adapt menus to accommodate children with allergies, intolerances, and special dietary needs
  • Provide guidance on food purchasing and preparation to maximize nutritional value and minimize waste
  • Develop and deliver nutrition education sessions and materials for parents, families, and Head Start staff on topics such as healthy eating habits, food safety, and the importance of nutrition for child development
  • Provide training to staff on implementing nutrition policies, accommodating dietary restrictions, and recognizing nutritional concerns
  • Participate in parent meetings and program events to provide nutrition information and resources
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of nutrition assessments, care plans, and interventions

Other Requirements

  • Must pass a criminal background check and other required clearances 
  • Must have or be willing to obtain CPR and First Aid certification 
  • Must meet the physical requirements of the position, including the ability to lift and carry young children, bend, stoop, and actively engage with children 
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation is required

Schedule

  • Monday-Friday
  • 8AM-4PM or 8:30AM-4:30PM or 9AM-5PM
  • This is a 46/52 week position. The specific work-year length will be determined based on departmental staffing requirements and may be communicated at the time of offer
  • Travel amongst sites and for professional conferences and development is required

Hourly Rate: $30-$35

 

Knowledge, Skills and abilities

  • Strong knowledge of child nutrition and development
  • Ability to develop creative and culturally appropriate nutrition education materials
  • Strong organizational and time management skill
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Proficiency 1 in basic computer applications

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of one year experience in clinical or community nutrition preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or a related field is required.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is mandatory
  • Licensure as a Dietitian/Nutritionist in the state of Massachusetts (LDN) is required or must be obtained within a specified timeframe
