Summary

~Provides for recruitment and retention of Girl Scout members and volunteers by developing and implementing girl programs that meet developmental needs and interests; develops innovative and creative programs which support the Girl Scouts Leadership Experience; recruits and supervises volunteer staff to expand program options in all geographic areas and reach all racial/ethnic populations in the community; communicates and promotes program participation by the formulation of program goals through the planning process.  May plan, organize, supervise and direct all activities, staff, and operations of a seasonal camp facility that may require incumbent to live on camp site during the camp(s) season.

Key Responsibilities

Develops annual goals, objectives and budget within the framework of council goals and budget constraints; monitors, reports on progress and evaluates goals and objectives.

Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates volunteers to develop and expand program activities for girls in the urban, suburban and rural parts of the council.

Develops, designs and implements innovative recreational and educational programs to attract identified percentage of membership annually; assesses girls needs and interests, applies youth development principles and leverages community resources.

May plan, organize, supervise and direct all activities, staff, and operations of a seasonal camp facility to include:

Promotes and supports national core programs of GSUSA and identifies and executes strategies for local delivery of national program.

Evaluates activities for appropriateness, attainment of objectives, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

Ensures the health, safety and welfare of campers and seasonal staff through effective management of the facility.

Prepares and conducts pre-camp staff training.

Recruits, hires, and trains seasonal staff.

 

Establishes and maintains a system of record retention and evaluation of all programs, operations and staff.

Utilizes crisis management plan, including emergency procedures as appropriate.

Prepares evaluation and summary report of camp operations including:  inventories, staff evaluations, camper reports, and recommendations for improvement to processes and operations for the following season.

Monitors personnel actions, in conjunction with supervisor, recommends disciplinary actions and/or termination of employment as appropriate and necessary.

May coordinate with on-site ranger to ensure that required facility maintenance is performed as needed.

Monitors and communicates policies, procedures and standards for the program; identifies and corrects deficiencies or problem as necessary.

Encourages others to participate as active team members in an effort to support the work of Girl Scouts.

May perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in youth program management.

Experience including strong leadership skills to motive and retain volunteers.

Ability to work in a team based environment.

Demonstrated experience in developing and giving presentations to groups.

Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize work.

Excellent organizational skills.

Ability to analyze data and produce required statistical reports.

Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings and weekends.

Demonstrated experience in recruiting and working with volunteers.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field; and,

 

Three to four years of progressively responsible related experience preferably in education, youth programming, or volunteer management; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Valid State Driver’s License and acceptable driving record as determined by an annual driving record check.

The safety of our campers and staff is the number one priority of the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi.  We thoroughly investigate the background of all prospective staff members including personal and professional reference verification and criminal background checks.  Applicants will be automatically disqualified for this position if investigation reveals convictions for crimes against children, crimes against the elderly or felony drug trafficking.  All other convictions will be considered relative to the requirements of the position on a case-by-case basis.

Principles, practices, and theories of program design and development.

Principles and practices of volunteer recruitment, management, training and supervision.

Principles and practices of effective program management, operations and activities.

Record keeping, report preparation, and records management techniques.

Basic budgetary principles and practices.

All applicable state, federal, and local laws, rules and regulations that relate to the operations of a resident camp. (depending upon area of assignment)

Experienced in high/low ropes courses, aquatics, and equestrian programs. (depending upon area of assignment)

Skill in:

Researching, compiling and summarizing a variety of informational and statistical data and materials.

Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence, presentations, and other written materials.

Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up with a minimum of direction.

All computer software applications utilized in the performance of the essential functions of the job.

Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established policy guidelines.

Applying logical thinking to resolve problems or accomplish tasks; to understand, interpret and communicate policies, procedures and protocols.

Communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.

Assigning, directing, reviewing and evaluating the work of seasonal staff & volunteers.

Selecting and motivating seasonal staff & volunteers and providing for their training and development.

Abilities:
