Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Religious Education supports the Director of Religious Education (DRE) in developing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive faith formation programs for children, youth, families, and catechists. This position assists in fostering a vibrant Catholic community by promoting lifelong faith formation rooted in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Working collaboratively with parish staff, clergy, volunteers, and families, the Assistant Director helps ensure that all religious education programs reflect the mission of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Diocese of Memphis.


Reports To: Director of Religious Education

  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Religious Education Programming

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing parish religious education programs for preschool through high school. 
  • Coordinate weekly faith formation classes and sacramental preparation programs. 
  • Help develop age-appropriate catechetical curriculum consistent with diocesan standards. 
  • Support Vacation Bible School, summer faith formation, retreats, and special religious education events. 
  • Assist with family faith formation initiatives and parent education opportunities. 

Sacramental Preparation

Assist with preparation for:

  • First Reconciliation 
  • First Holy Communion 
  • Confirmation 

Responsibilities include:

  • Scheduling sessions 
  • Preparing materials 
  • Communicating with families 
  • Coordinating liturgical celebrations 
  • Maintaining sacramental records 

  

Catechist Recruitment and Support

  • Recruit, interview, train, and retain volunteer catechists and classroom assistants. 
  • Coordinate catechist orientation and ongoing formation. 
  • Provide instructional resources and classroom support. 
  • Encourage spiritual growth and continued certification through diocesan programs. 

  

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate student enrollment and attendance records. 
  • Assist with registration and tuition/fee collection, if applicable. 
  • Prepare calendars, newsletters, bulletins, and program communications. 
  • Maintain parish database and sacramental documentation. 
  • Order curriculum, books, supplies, and educational materials. 
  • Assist with budget tracking and purchasing. 

  

Parish Ministry Support

  • Collaborate with parish staff and clergy on faith formation initiatives. 
  • Participate in parish events, liturgical celebrations, and community outreach. 
  • Assist with youth ministry activities as needed. 
  • Promote stewardship and volunteer engagement. 
  • Support evangelization and hospitality efforts within the parish. 

  

Communication

  • Maintain regular communication with parents and families. 
  • Respond promptly to inquiries regarding religious education. 
  • Utilize parish communication platforms, including email, social media, and parish management software. 
  • Prepare informational materials for parish publications and the parish website. 
Requirements
  • Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church. 
  • Active participation in parish life. 
  • Commitment to Catholic teachings values. 
  • Bachelor's degree in Theology, Religious Education, Education, Pastoral Ministry, or related field      preferred. 
  • Minimum of two years of experience in catechetical ministry, education, youth ministry, or parish      ministry. 
  • Knowledge of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and diocesan catechetical guidelines. 
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and parish database software. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, volunteers, and parish families. 

Preferred

  • Catechist certification or willingness to obtain diocesan certification. 
  • Experience coordinating sacramental preparation. 
  • Experience managing volunteers. 
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred. 

  

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. 
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout parish facilities. 
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required. 
  • Ability to participate in retreats, parish events, and outdoor activities. 

  

Work Schedule

This position requires flexibility and includes:

  • Sunday mornings 
  • One or more weekday evenings 
  • Occasional weekends 
  • Holy Days and special parish events 
  • Summer programming as needed

The successful candidate must:

  • Successfully complete all Diocese of Memphis Safe Environment requirements. 
  • Pass all required background checks. 
  • Maintain compliance with diocesan policies regarding child protection. 
  • Complete required continuing education and training.
