The Animal Legal Defense Fund accomplishes this mission by filing high-impact lawsuits to protect animals from harm, providing free legal assistance and training to prosecutors to assure that animal abusers are held accountable for their crimes, supporting tough animal protection legislation and fighting legislation harmful to animals, gathering data about and advocating for effective regulation of animal exploitative industries and providing resources and opportunities to law students and professionals to advance the emerging field of animal law.
Role Description:
The Direct Marketing Specialist executes ALDF’s multi-channel campaigns across digital and direct mail, supporting fundraising, advocacy, and other supporter engagement initiatives. Reporting to the Head of Marketing, this role implements the operational systems that move campaigns from planning through launch — coordinating timelines across internal teams and external partners, producing and deploying in-house email campaigns, and ensuring all communications reach the right audiences effectively and on time. This role plays a critical role in driving revenue growth, deepening supporter engagement, and mobilizing advocates, ensuring ALDF’s campaigns are executed with precision and impact.
How You Will Make a Difference:
Campaign Coordination
- Own the campaign calendar and production timelines across digital, SMS, and direct mail channels.
- Develop and maintain cross-functional timelines with internal teams, agency partners, and external vendors (mail shops, printers, platform providers).
- Partner with Head of Marketing to shape campaign engagement journeys, integrating educational, advocacy, fundraising, and stewardship opportunities, as appropriate, through the arc of a campaign.
- Ensure creative, data, and production deliverables stay on track from concept through launch.
- Identify and proactively escalate risks to campaign timelines or delivery.
- Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for agency partners, consolidating feedback and ensuring deliverables align with campaign goals, timelines, and budgets.
Email Production
- Pull, segment, and manage audience lists for email campaigns, including fundraising appeals, petitions, action alerts, newsletters, and event communications.
- Build, test, and quality-assure emails within the email platform, including rendering, link validation, and seed list checks.
- Schedule and deploy campaigns to targeted audience segments, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
- Support ongoing list growth, segmentation, and targeting strategies to improve engagement and performance.
Performance Tracking
- Produce regular performance reports across digital and mail channels, tracking revenue, engagement, and spend against goals.
- Analyze campaign results to identify trends, insights, and opportunities for optimization.
- Monitor A/B and multivariate testing results and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
- Partner with team to refine targeting, messaging, and channel strategy based on performance.

We Are Looking for Candidates With:
- A bachelor's degree in communications or a related field is preferred. In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 5 additional years of fundraising experience may be considered equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in direct response fundraising, with meaningful exposure to both digital and direct mail channels
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex production timelines across multiple concurrent campaigns, with experience coordinating internal teams and external agency partners
- Hands-on experience building, testing, and deploying campaigns in an email marketing platforms (Engaging Networks preferred)
- Experience working with donor or supporter CRM systems (Salesforce preferred)
- Strong understanding of segmentation, audience targeting, and lifecycle marketing across both donors and non-donor supporters
- Comfort working with performance data and translating results into actionable insights
- Demonstrated interest and experience with animal welfare issues and committed to the mission of the Animal Legal Defense Fund
- The ability to travel periodically for staff meetings and retreats (estimated 1-3 trips annually)
We Offer Competitive Compensation with Excellent Benefits, Including:
- Starting annual salary of $86,499 for most geographic locations.
- For candidates located within 25 miles of Washington D.C., Cotati, CA, and Los Angeles, starting pay is $91,052
- For candidates located within 25 miles of New York City and San Francisco, starting pay is $95,604
To ensure salary equity, we do not negotiate salary outside of the published starting rate. Rate is determined by role, using set geographical factors.

This role is included in a collective bargaining unit that is represented by the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU). Certain terms and conditions of your employment, including wages and benefits, have been negotiated with the Union and are included in a collective bargaining agreement between ALDF and the Union.
