The Yard Operator performs a variety of duties and is responsible for operating; heavy equipment, light equipment to load, unload and process scrap materials. In addition, the equipment operator is responsible for buying, grading, sorting, and processing scrap metals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Load or unload scrap metal materials as needed
- Transport and load materials from one place to another
- Perform pre- and post-operation inspections on equipment and vehicles
- Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and vehicles
- Wash, lubricate and fuel equipment and vehicles
- Dismantle/disassemble or take apart components
- Utilize software for purchasing scrap metals
- Sorting, grading, and processing scrap metals
- Ensure a clean and orderly workplace; clean and prepare site by removing debris and possible hazards
- Maintain various records and/or logs
- Exercise excellent customer service while communicating and assisting our customers

Previous Education and Experience:
- Previous experience with heavy equipment
- Experience using hand tools and power tools
- Mechanically inclined
- Knowledge and experience of the scrap metal recycling industry, a plus
