Competency Restoration Professional
Description

The Competency Restoration Professional provides individualized education and support to clients who have been found incompetent to proceed in legal matters. Under the direction of the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Director, this position works one-on-one with clients using the State of Minnesota competency restoration curriculum to help them better understand their legal charges, courtroom roles, legal processes, and potential outcomes.


This role is ideal for someone who is patient, adaptable, and skilled at meeting people where they are. You will meet with clients regularly, adjusting teaching methods and pacing based on each individual’s comprehension, literacy, attention, disability, mental health needs, and learning style. Responsibilities also include documenting client progress in the electronic medical record (EMR), maintaining consistent scheduling, tracking time and mileage, and completing required administrative documentation. Services are primarily provided in person, with some travel and virtual sessions as appropriate. The position also requires developing and maintaining knowledge of Minnesota competency restoration requirements and relevant court processes and may include providing information to the court regarding a client’s participation and progress when required.

Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates should have knowledge of or experience with the legal and court system, including an understanding of criminal charges and potential penalties. Familiarity with Minnesota Rules 20.01 and 20.02, the civil commitment process, and the role of Forensic Navigators is preferred.


Successful candidates will be able to adapt their approach to meet clients with varying levels of comprehension, literacy, attention, disability, mental health needs, and other individual circumstances. This position requires strong communication, organization, documentation, and time-management skills, along with the ability to maintain consistent client schedules and accurately document participation, progress, and services provided. Candidates must also be comfortable communicating professionally with court and service professionals and providing information regarding client progress in court when required.


Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license with a good driving record, and successfully complete a Department of Human Services (DHS) background study.


PHYSICAL & WORK REQUIREMENTS

This position requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods, use a computer for documentation and data entry, and lift or carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds. Regular travel is required to provide services in client homes and other community or program locations, with virtual services utilized when appropriate. The position involves consistent weekly client appointments and ongoing coordination with the SUD Director, Forensic Navigators, court-related professionals, and other service partners.

Salary Description
$20.00 - $22.00 per hour
