GENERAL SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Environmental Compliance Manager, the Environmental Compliance & Hazardous Waste Coordinator supports Goodwill’s environmental compliance programs, with a primary focus on Non-Disposable Items (NDI), Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), Universal Waste, and related requirements. This position maintains compliance at the Hazardous Waste/HHW storage area, provides field support to Goodwill locations, conducts inspections, assists with corrective actions and quarterly environmental compliance audits, and promotes safe handling and management of regulated materials in accordance with applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in maintaining and implementing Goodwill’s Non-Disposable Items (NDI), Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), Universal Waste, and related environmental compliance programs.
- Receives, identifies, categorizes, segregates, labels, stores, and prepares hazardous and regulated materials for disposal or transfer in accordance with established procedures.
- Assists with HHW sampling and identification of unknown substances to support proper categorization and segregation of incompatible materials.
- Coordinates, as directed, the pickup and transportation of hazardous waste, universal waste, medical waste, and other regulated materials by licensed waste vendors.
- Conducts weekly inspections of the HHW storage area, containers, and drums; identify and report damaged, leaking, improperly labeled, or improperly stored materials.
- Maintains required manifests, shipping and inspection records, inventories, and other environmental compliance documentation.
- Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment, and waste categories at the Hazardous Waste/HHW storage area.
- Prepares appropriate sellable or reusable items for transfer to Outlet and Retail locations.
- Visits Goodwill locations to provide hands-on assistance, guidance, and basic training to employees and management regarding environmental compliance, hazardous waste, and safety procedures, as directed by the Environmental Compliance Manager.
- Conducts assigned environmental compliance inspections, identify deficiencies and potential hazards, and assist locations with corrective actions and follow-up.
- Assists the Environmental Compliance Manager with quarterly environmental compliance audits, including inspections, documentation, follow-up, and verification of corrective actions.
- Communicates significant, recurring, or unresolved compliance concerns and trends to the Environmental Compliance Manager.
- Monitors assigned activities for compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local environmental requirements, including EPA, CalEPA, RCRA, California Title 22, and applicable local environmental and fire regulations.
- Immediately reports spills, releases, unsafe conditions, environmental concerns, or regulatory issues to the Environmental Compliance Manager or appropriate management.
- Follows all Goodwill environmental, safety, hazardous waste, and operational policies and procedures and complete required training.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic Qualifications of the Role:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- One to three years’ equivalent work experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with employees, management, program participants, customers and third parties.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, email, spreadsheets, and claims or reporting systems.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and maintain effective working relationships in a team-oriented environment.
- Must be able to function independently in a work setting.
- Must pass drug screening and criminal background check.
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of self, others, or company property.
- No record or disclosure of criminal conviction that indicates a tendency toward theft, violence, dishonesty, deceit, drug use, moral turpitude or predatory behavior in conflict with the functions listed within this job description.
