We are seeking a Lead/Senior Physical Designer with the experience and leadership skills to lead physical substation design projects ranging from 15kV to 345kV.


Position Summary:

The Senior Designer approves and drives the production of substation drawing sets while also acting as a subject matter expert within BHMG. This role focuses on applying substation design standards, producing general drawings, and supporting engineers and senior designers in developing safe, constructible design packages. Owning design quality, coordinating across

disciplines, resolving design issues, and mentoring junior staff.


Key Responsibilities:

• Physical Design: Lead complex yard arrangements, grounding, conduit/trench, and foundations; produce advanced sections/elevations/details; anticipate constructability issues and integrate solutions for brownfield and new build conditions.

• Oversee BOMs, specifications, and submittals; enforce rigorous QA/QC and checklist completion.

• Partner with Procurement on technical clarifications, substitutions, and long-lead items.

• Drive alignment across civil, structural, survey, SCADA/comms, and protection; lead field support and drawing updates.

• Maintain documentation quality and consistency across multiple high-complexity tasks.  

• Interface directly with utility clients, EPC contractors, and project stakeholders to resolve technical issues and support project execution.

• Help estimate design effort, support schedule development, and plan design resource needs.

• Guide and mentor junior staff on standards, drawing quality, and design best practices.

• Provide design reviews and task delegation to meet project KPI's.

• Maintain a strong understanding of utility substation design practices, industry standards, and best practices for voltage classes ranging from 15kV to 345kV.

• Help establish and improve design processes, standards, and best practices as our team continues to grow.

Requirements

Education/Experience:

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, drafting, or related discipline.

• Typically, 7 or more years of substation design experience across both electrical and physical disciplines with proven project-level design leadership. 2 or more years of demonstrated mentorship or people-leadership experience preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and practical experience may also be considered.

Skills:

• Advanced knowledge of electrical & physical substation design, codes, and standards; strategic technical judgment.

•  Experience to lead physical substation design projects ranging from 15kV to 345kV.

• Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills; mentors across all levels.

• Ability to plan workloads, forecast design needs, and ensure on-time, high-quality delivery.
