The Mortgage Underwriter is a full-time, remote role. This role is responsible for reviewing and analyzing loan applications, credit reports, income documentation, assets, and property appraisals to assess risk and ensure compliance with lending guidelines and regulatory requirements. The Mortgage Underwriter will make sound credit decisions, issue approvals, suspensions, or declines, and clearly communicate conditions to loan officers and processors. Day-to-day tasks include verifying data accuracy, evaluating borrowers’ ability to repay, resolving documentation issues, and maintaining detailed records in underwriting systems. The role also involves collaborating with internal teams to streamline the loan process, supporting quality control initiatives, and contributing to continuous improvement of underwriting standards.

Requirements


  • Strong knowledge of the Mortgage Industry and Mortgages, including conventional, FHA, VA, and other loan products.
  • Demonstrated experience in Mortgage Underwriting, with a track record of sound credit decisions and guideline adherence.
  • Well-developed Analytical Skills to interpret financial data, assess risk, and apply complex lending criteria.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing documentation and entering data into loan origination and underwriting systems.
  • Familiarity with federal and state lending regulations, investor guidelines, and compliance requirements.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills to explain conditions and decisions to internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment, manage multiple files, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
  • Prior experience as a mortgage underwriter or in a related mortgage operations role; DE/SAR or other underwriting certifications are a plus.
  • High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field is preferred.
