Laundry Worker
Description

JOB SUMMARY: Loads, unloads, and tends laundering machines to clean soiled linens, garments, drapes, and other hospital articles. Mixes and adds cleaning solutions to machines. Dries, folds, sorts, and counts articles according to identification or type to verify quantities. May press articles. Distributes laundered articles to appropriate hospital department. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Laundry Operations

  • Collects soiled linen and garments and brings them to laundry area.
  • Inspect soiled linen for need of repairs, makes minor repairs and disposes of items that cannot be repaired.
  • Handles, stores, processes and transports all linens to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Washes, dries and prepares linens and clothing for reuse.
  • Operates washers and dryers in compliance with directions for processing linen and garments.

Laundry Distribution

  • Hangs finished garments on hangers or folds and stacks garments.
  • Distributes clothes to resident’s rooms in Nursing Home.
  • Folds and bundles each item of clean linen
  • Delivers clean linen to user area.
  • Places clean linen in department’s linen storage area.

Laundry Equipment

  • Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor.
  • Cleans and disinfects all washers after washing contaminated linen and at the end of the shift.
  • Keeps dryers lint free during the shift and cleans them thoroughly at the end of the shift.
  • Leaves laundry area and equipment clean.


Requirements
  • Education – High School or equivalent preferred.
  • Job Related skills – Ability to read, write and understand instructions in English. Knowledge of Laundry devices and equipment desirable.
  • License, Registry or Certification – None required.
  • Experience –
  • Prior Work Experience - Entry level position
  • Technical Training – None required.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements -  
  • Position requires extended periods of walking and standing. 
  •  Lifting up to 50 pounds and transporting up to 30 pounds on carts.
  •  Pushing and pulling of carts, bending, stooping and reaching as required for washing, ironing, drying and stocking.
  • The ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instructions of directions.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS

  • Works with steam, hot water and strong chemicals.
  • Works in an area that is warm, humid and subject to higher than normal noise levels.
  • Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potential infectious materials.
  • Knowledge of all chemicals and cleaning agents necessary to complete job.
  • Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
  • Follows MCHD Policies and Procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the department management staff.
  • Performs essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
