Job Summary: The Junior Varsity (JV) Boys and Girls Tennis Coach leads and develops the JV tennis program in a manner that reflects the mission, vision, and Christian values of the school. The coach serves as both an athletic instructor and a spiritual leader, using tennis as a platform for discipleship, character development, teamwork, and competitive growth. The JV Coach works collaboratively with the Varsity Tennis Coach(es) and Athletic Director to provide a unified tennis program and prepare student-athletes for continued development and varsity-level competition.
Athletics & Program Leadership
- Plan and lead JV boys and girls tennis practices, matches, and team activities.
- Teach tennis fundamentals, including serving, groundstrokes, volleys, footwork, positioning, strategy, scoring, and match play.
- Provide appropriate conditioning, skill development, and instruction based on each student-athlete's ability and experience.
- Develop student-athletes with an emphasis on progression toward varsity-level competition.
- Work collaboratively with the Varsity Tennis Coach(es) to maintain consistency in coaching philosophy, expectations, player development, and overall program direction.
- Foster a team culture rooted in discipline, perseverance, respect, accountability, teamwork, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, matches, travel, and school-sponsored activities.
- Maintain a safe, organized, positive, and developmentally appropriate athletic environment.
Spiritual Leadership & Discipleship
- Model a growing personal faith in Jesus Christ and Christ-centered conduct in all interactions.
- Integrate Biblical principles such as humility, integrity, perseverance, respect, and servant leadership into coaching practices.
- Lead or participate in team devotionals, prayer, and faith-based discussions as appropriate.
- Encourage student-athletes to grow spiritually, emotionally, and relationally, recognizing athletics as a ministry opportunity.
- Support the school's Statement of Faith, mission, and values through word and example.
Program Coordination & Administration
- Collaborate with the Varsity Tennis Coach(es) and USTA representative regarding schedules, practices, matches, athlete development, and seasonal planning.
- Assist with the coordination and stewardship of tennis equipment, uniforms, facilities, and other program resources.
- Maintain appropriate records related to JV team rosters, match participation, results, and program activities as requested.
- Communicate program needs, concerns, and recommendations to the Varsity Tennis Coach(es) and Athletic Director in a timely manner.
- Support varsity practices, competitions, or program activities when requested.
Program & School Alignment
- Maintain compliance with school policies, league regulations, match requirements, and state athletic association rules.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with student-athletes, parents, officials, coaches, and school staff.
- Coordinate JV athlete participation and match lineups in collaboration with the Varsity Tennis Coach(es), as appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with the Varsity Tennis Coach(es) to promote continuity and unity throughout the boys and girls tennis program.
- Represent the school positively at all practices, competitions, events, and public activities.
- Partner with school administration and teachers as needed to support student success.
Student-Athlete Eligibility Expectations
- Enforce and support eligibility requirements related to academics, behavior, attendance, and conduct.
- Encourage student-athletes to prioritize academic responsibilities, personal character, and responsible team participation.
- Assist with athlete evaluations, player development, team placement, and recommendations for advancement to varsity competition.
- Address discipline or eligibility concerns in a manner consistent with school policy and Biblical principles of accountability and restoration.
Requirements
- A personal, active faith in Jesus Christ and agreement with the school's Statement of Faith.
- Required: New Mexico state coaching credential, 7-12 Athletic Coach Licensure.
- Prior tennis coaching or competitive playing experience at the high school, club, or equivalent level preferred.
- Strong understanding of tennis fundamentals, rules, scoring, match strategy, conditioning, and player development.
- Ability to teach and develop student-athletes with varying levels of tennis experience and skill.
- Ability to mentor and disciple high school-aged students through athletics.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, collaboration, and team-building skills.
- Ability to work effectively with the Varsity Tennis Coach(es), Athletic Director, and other members of the coaching staff.
- Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and uphold Christian standards of conduct.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Successful completion of background checks and required training.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, run, and actively engage for extended periods during practices and competitions.
- Ability to demonstrate or assist with tennis drills, techniques, conditioning activities, and match preparation as appropriate.
- Ability to lift, carry, set up, and manage tennis equipment and supplies as needed.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions associated with the tennis season.
Commitment
- Full attendance at practices, matches, meetings, and school-required athletic events throughout the season.
- Participation in pre-season preparation, postseason responsibilities, and athletic department meetings as assigned.
- Commitment to working collaboratively with the Varsity Tennis Coach(es) to support the development and success of the overall boys and girls tennis program.
- Commitment to student-athlete safety, development, sportsmanship, teamwork, and competitive excellence.
- Commitment to preparing JV student-athletes for continued growth and potential advancement to varsity competition.
- Commitment to uphold the mission of the school through athletics as a ministry.
