CNG FLEET TECHNICIAN


Department: Fleet & Maintenance

Location: Bloomington, CA

Office Hours/Days: 0700 - 1630 (M-F)

Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Position Summary

Ecology Auto Parts, Inc. is seeking a CNG Class A Truck Mechanic to support operations at our Bloomington, CA location. This role is responsible for performing intermediate to advanced mechanical service, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on Class A heavy-duty trucks and fleet equipment, including vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).


The CNG Class A Truck Mechanic plays a critical role in maintaining the safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, and operational readiness of the company's heavy-duty fleet. The ideal candidate possesses strong hands-on experience with Class A trucks and heavy-duty diesel or natural gas vehicle systems, strong diagnostic and mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to safe work practices when servicing CNG fuel systems and related components.


This position requires independence, attention to detail, sound mechanical judgment, and the ability to accurately diagnose and repair heavy-duty vehicles in a fast-paced industrial shop environment.


Responsibilities

 

  • Perform intermediate to advanced mechanical repairs and maintenance on Class A trucks and heavy-duty fleet equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair CNG-powered Class A trucks and related vehicle systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance services including oil and filter changes, fluid inspections, lubrication, cooling system maintenance, belt and hose inspections, and multi-point vehicle inspections.
  • Diagnose, service, and repair braking systems, air brake systems, suspension components, steering systems, driveline components, axles, differentials, wheel-end components, and other heavy-duty vehicle systems.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical and basic electronic systems, including batteries, starting and charging systems, lighting, sensors, wiring, and related components.
  • Inspect and service CNG fuel systems and components in accordance with manufacturer specifications, company procedures, and applicable safety requirements.
  • Inspect CNG tanks, valves, regulators, fuel lines, fittings, pressure-related components, and associated systems for damage, leaks, wear, or other safety concerns.
  • Perform CNG system inspections and repairs only within the technician's training, certification, and authorization.
  • Use diagnostic tools, scan tools, service information, schematics, and other equipment to identify mechanical, electrical, and drivability concerns.
  • Troubleshoot engine performance, emissions-related, and fuel-system concerns on CNG-powered vehicles.
  • Perform repairs and adjustments to ensure vehicles meet applicable safety, operational, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct pre-trip, post-repair, and safety inspections as required.
  • Accurately document repairs, labor, parts usage, inspections, and diagnostic findings in work orders or electronic maintenance systems.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment for safety concerns and report deficiencies to shop leadership promptly.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with company safety standards, OSHA regulations, and applicable CNG safety procedures.
  • Safely operate lifts, jacks, diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and standard heavy-duty shop equipment.
  • Assist with inventory control related to parts, tools, fluids, shop supplies, and other maintenance materials.
  • Coordinate with service writers, shop management, and operations staff to support efficient workflow and job prioritization.
  • Follow all environmental, safety, hazardous-material, CNG, and operational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to fleet reliability, shop efficiency, service quality, safety, and preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain awareness of manufacturer service procedures and applicable federal, state, and local requirements related to CNG-powered commercial vehicles.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned based on operational needs.
Requirements

Qualifications/Knowledge/Critical Skills

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 2–4 years of hands-on experience servicing Class A trucks, heavy-duty vehicles, or commercial fleet equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing and repairing heavy-duty vehicle mechanical systems.
  • Experience working with CNG-powered vehicles and CNG fuel systems preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Class A truck systems, including engines, air brakes, suspension, steering, driveline, electrical, cooling, fuel, and emissions systems.
  • Strong understanding of heavy-duty preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to safely diagnose and service CNG vehicle systems in accordance with applicable procedures and safety requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate diagnostic scan tools, lifts, jacks, hand tools, power tools, and standard heavy-duty shop equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with attention to detail and quality workmanship.
  • Ability to read and follow work orders, manufacturer service procedures, wiring diagrams, technical documentation, and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and drivability concerns systematically and independently.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively in a team environment.
  • Reliable attendance, strong work ethic, and professional attitude.
  • Valid driver's license required; clean driving record preferred.
  • Class A CDL preferred but not required.
  • ASE certifications, especially Heavy Truck, Diesel, or related certifications, are a plus.
  • CNG/LNG vehicle service training or certification is a plus.
  • Air brake experience and knowledge are a plus.
  • Experience with commercial fleet maintenance and DOT-related inspections is a plus.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

 

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, climb, and use hands and arms for extended periods.
  • Frequently required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Work is performed in a shop and yard environment with exposure to noise, dust, grease, exhaust, weather conditions, CNG-related equipment, and industrial machinery.
  • May be required to work around pressurized CNG systems and heavy-duty vehicle equipment while following established safety procedures.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be capable of safely performing essential job functions in a heavy-duty industrial maintenance environment.

Compensation

The CNG Class A Truck Mechanic position offers an hourly compensation range of $25.00 to $40.00 per hour, dependent upon experience, skill level, and qualifications.
