BuyWander is one of the fastest growing companies in the United States, an e commerce auction platform for retail returns, overstock, and excess inventory. Through a simple bid and win model, customers sign up, bid, schedule a local pickup, and enjoy a 7 day return window.
We turn liquidated merchandise across multiple categories into everyday deals, supported by daily inventory rotations, our WanderBucks loyalty program, and multiple physical pickup locations. As we continue to scale, we are building the financial infrastructure and accounting team needed to support our growth.
POSITION SUMMARY
BuyWander is seeking an experienced and highly capable Senior Accountant to play a key role in building and maintaining an accurate, scalable accounting function.
Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant will be responsible for significant portions of the monthly close process, account reconciliations, inventory accounting, transaction analysis, journal entries, and financial reporting. This role will work closely with the Controller and other business leaders to ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of BuyWander’s financial information.
This is a hands on role in a fast growing, multi location business. The right candidate is comfortable digging into complex transactions, solving problems, improving processes, and taking ownership of their work. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Play a significant role in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
- Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations and investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Support inventory accounting across multiple locations, including inventory valuation, costing, shrinkage, adjustments, and cost of goods sold.
- Reconcile inventory activity and financial records with operational and inventory systems, including BuyWander’s internally developed inventory system, Chuk.
- Analyze high volume transaction data across auction activity, payment processors, point of sale activity, refunds, and the WanderBucks loyalty program.
- Prepare and post journal entries related to inventory, revenue, payroll, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and other general ledger activity.
- Assist with the application of revenue recognition principles to BuyWander’s auction and marketplace business model, including buyer premiums, winning bid settlements, refunds, and loyalty program activity.
- Support the reconciliation of daily and monthly cash and payment activity across multiple payment processors and locations.
- Assist with payroll accounting and the preparation of payroll related accruals, including hourly labor costs.
- Assist with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other accounting processes as needed.
- Support the Controller in maintaining accurate accounting records, internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
- Assist with audit preparation and provide schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation to external auditors.
- Support tax compliance activities, including sales tax reporting and coordination with external tax professionals.
- Help maintain and improve the general ledger, chart of accounts, accounting systems, and integrations between operational and financial systems.
- Analyze financial results and identify unusual activity, trends, errors, and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist in the preparation of financial reports, management reporting, and other analysis for leadership.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls, reduce manual work, and increase automation as the company continues to grow.
- Partner with operations and other departments to understand business activity and ensure financial information accurately reflects company operations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 4 or more years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong understanding of US GAAP and general accounting principles.
- Experience participating in and supporting a full monthly close process.
- Strong experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analysis.
- Experience with inventory accounting, including costing, valuation, shrinkage, adjustments, or cost of goods sold.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and the ability to work with and analyze large volumes of financial and operational data.
- Experience working with accounting systems and the ability to learn and navigate complex or custom business systems.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to investigate discrepancies, identify root causes, and follow issues through to resolution.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast paced, growing environment.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both finance and non finance team members.
- A hands on approach and willingness to take ownership of work and contribute wherever needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in retail, e commerce, marketplace, liquidation, distribution, or another business involving physical inventory.
- Experience with multi location inventory accounting.
- Experience reconciling high volume transaction data from multiple sources, including payment processors, point of sale systems, e commerce platforms, or marketplace systems.
- Experience with sales tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Experience supporting external financial statement audits.
- Experience working in a high growth company, startup, or rapidly scaling organization.
- Experience working with internally developed or customized business systems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- This is primarily a desk based analytical role. It may include periodic time working in BuyWander locations to better understand inventory flow, processing, and business operations, as well as occasional travel to company markets.
- The position requires the ability to see, hear, communicate, use hands and fingers, sit, stand, walk, reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, squat, and stoop in the performance of daily activities.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with others through talking, hearing, listening, and exchanging information.
