KAR & Larrabee Mechanical Contractors is seeking a hands-on Safety Coordinator to support safety activities on our construction projects in the Gainesville, Florida area.
For more than 50 years, KAR & Larrabee has delivered mechanical contracting solutions throughout Florida, supporting complex commercial and institutional projects across healthcare, education, hospitality, transportation, commercial facilities, and more.
This position is ideal for a safety professional who enjoys being in the field, working directly with construction crews, identifying potential hazards, and helping ensure everyone goes home safely at the end of the day.
The Opportunity
As a Safety Coordinator, you will work closely with project managers, superintendents, foremen, field employees, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders to maintain a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company policies, project requirements, and applicable OSHA regulations.
You will spend the majority of your time in the field observing work, coaching employees, performing inspections, documenting safety activities, and helping resolve potential hazards before they become incidents.
What You Will Do
- Conduct routine jobsite safety inspections and identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and potential hazards
- Work directly with field leadership and employees to correct safety concerns
- Monitor compliance with OSHA standards, company safety policies, and project-specific requirements
- Lead or assist with toolbox talks, safety meetings, orientations, and employee training
- Assist with Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), pre-task planning, and other safety documentation
- Monitor work involving fall protection, ladders, scaffolding, lifts, hot work, confined spaces, material handling, and other construction-related hazards
- Verify appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is being used
- Assist with incident, injury, near-miss, and property damage investigations
- Maintain accurate safety records, inspection reports, training documentation, and corrective-action tracking
- Partner with project leadership to implement corrective actions and improve jobsite safety performance
- Help ensure subcontractors and vendors comply with site safety expectations
- Participate in project startup meetings and ongoing safety planning
- Promote a proactive safety culture through coaching, communication, and employee engagement
What We Are Looking For
- 2+ years of construction safety experience preferred
- Experience supporting commercial, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, piping, industrial, or similar construction environments strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of OSHA construction regulations and jobsite safety practices
- OSHA 30 Construction certification preferred
- First Aid/CPR certification preferred
- Ability to recognize hazards and confidently address unsafe conditions
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable working with field employees, foremen, superintendents, project managers, and subcontractors
- Strong documentation and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Ability to work in active construction environments, including climbing ladders, walking uneven terrain, and working indoors and outdoors in Florida weather
What Will Make You Stand Out
- Experience with mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, piping, or sheet metal operations
- OSHA 510, CHST, STS-C, or similar safety credentials
- Experience conducting incident investigations and developing corrective actions
- Experience supporting large commercial or institutional construction projects
- Strong understanding of fall protection, hot work, lift operation, excavation, confined-space, and material-handling safety
