Description

Responsible for supervising all Admitting Department Clerks in the general Admitting Department area, Outpatient, and the Emergency Department Admitting areas.  Maintains efficient and orderly admission of inpatients and admitting process of individuals who have hospital-based outpatient testing or procedure.  Maintains open communication with the Nursing Supervisor, Business Office, and Environmental Services. Participates in performance improvement and CQI activities

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED; associate or bachelor’s degree in business preferred.

• Previous experience in hospital admitting or other healthcare-related field highly desired.

• Previous general office experience and/or previous admitting or medical insurance experience preferred.

• Previous supervisory or management experience highly desired.

• Current BLS


ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for the Admitting Department, including reservations for hospital services, preadmitting patients, verifying insurance eligibility, admitting outpatients and inpatients.

• Ensures that the Admitting Department Clerks are collecting accurate information from the patient and entering it correctly into the computer system.  Periodically audit admissions for accuracy and employee performance. 

• Responsible for in-services for the Admitting Department concerning issues such as Conditions of Admissions, advance directives, patient’s rights and responsibilities, HIPAA, hospital policies and procedures.

• Is available to the registrars to handle patients’ concerns, complaints.

• Assists in updating the Admitting Department policy and procedures as needed.

• Communicates clearly and concisely within the department and with other hospital departments.

• Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.

• Interacts professionally with patient/family and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.

• Demonstrates the ability to work with other departments for the overall good of the hospital.

• Works effectively with others, demonstrates leadership and teaching ability and the ability to work under pressure.

• Documentation meets current standards and policies.

• Maintains and operates equipment safely and correctly.

• Orders supplies and printing weekly; obtains orders as required.

• Responsible for operating the Admitting Department safe for patient valuables.

• Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

• Responsible for completion of annual performance evaluations for each staff member; conducts evaluations for new staff prior to completion of probationary period.

• Counsels employees, develops staff and, as appropriate, utilizes the disciplinary process. 

• Holds staff meetings, provides minutes of the meeting to Admitting Department staff members.
