Goldsboro Builders Supply, a trusted family of companies serving Eastern North Carolina, is seeking an experienced, hands-on Assistant General Manager at our Kinston Builders Supply location to help lead our retail store and lumber yard operations.

This position is ideal for a motivated leader who enjoys working with customers, managing daily operations, developing employees, and staying actively involved on the sales floor and in the yard. As the second-in-command, you will partner with the General Manager to ensure exceptional customer service, operational excellence, inventory accuracy, employee engagement, and a safe work environment.  If you have experience in building materials, lumber, hardware, construction supply, or retail operations leadership, we'd like to hear from you.


What You'll Do

Customer Service & Sales Leadership

  • Deliver outstanding service to contractors, builders, homeowners, and retail customers.
  • Assist customers with product selection, pricing, quotations, and order entry.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships that drive repeat business.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and efficiently.
  • Support sales growth through exceptional customer experiences.

Operations & Yard Management

  • Help oversee day-to-day retail store and lumber yard operations.
  • Safely operate forklifts and material handling equipment.
  • Assist with loading customer vehicles and preparing deliveries.
  • Monitor inventory levels and ensure accurate product stocking.
  • Receive and inspect incoming merchandise and building materials.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient yard, warehouse, and showroom.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Serve as the General Manager's primary operational partner.
  • Supervise, coach, and support team members.
  • Assist with employee scheduling and workflow coordination.
  • Provide training and performance feedback.
  • Lead daily operations when the General Manager is absent.
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and outstanding customer service.

Safety & Compliance

  • Foster a strong culture of workplace safety.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and OSHA standards.
  • Identify and address safety concerns proactively.
  • Support safe loading, unloading, storage, and material handling practices.


Requirements

 Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and work independently.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with business software or point-of-sale systems.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds regularly and work in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Preferred

  • 3+ years of experience in lumber, building materials, hardware, home improvement, retail operations, construction supply, or a related industry.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of lumber, millwork, windows, doors, and building products.
  • Forklift certification or ability to become certified.
