Summary
The Custodian/Janitorial Worker is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, appearance, and general readiness of Blessed Sacrament Church and School facilities. This position helps ensure that parishioners, students, staff, ministries, and visitors have a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. Employee would perform routine cleaning and custodial duties throughout assigned areas of the campus, including the Parish Hall, gymnasium, banquet hall, social room, meeting rooms, cafeteria, library, restrooms, foyers, hallways, and other parish and school spaces as assigned. This position also assists with room set-up and breakdown for parish, school, ministry, and special events and reports maintenance, safety, or facility concerns to the Maintenance Manager.
The Custodian/Janitorial Worker works under the direction of the Maintenance Manager and Principal and may be asked to assist with other facility-related duties as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain assigned parish and school areas, including restrooms, hallways, meeting rooms, gym, cafeteria, library, banquet hall, social room, and common areas.
- Perform routine custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, sanitizing surfaces, cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, and restocking supplies.
- Conduct routine walkthroughs of buildings and grounds to remove litter and identify cleanliness, safety, or maintenance concerns.
- Promptly report needed repairs, damaged equipment, plumbing or lighting issues, safety hazards, and other facility concerns to the Maintenance Manager.
- Set up and break down tables, chairs, and other equipment for parish, school, ministry, rental, and special events.
- Monitor custodial and paper supplies, maintain organized storage areas, and notify the Maintenance Manager when supplies need to be reordered.
- Properly use, clean, and care for custodial equipment, tools, and cleaning products.
- Follow all parish and school safety, health, security, and workplace procedures and promptly report unsafe conditions or incidents.
- Assist the Maintenance Manager, staff, and volunteers with reasonable facility-related and manual tasks as needed, including lifting and carrying items up to 30 pounds.
- Any other duties as required by the Pastor, Maintenance Manager, or Principal.
Qualifications:
- Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Prior custodian / janitorial experience preferred.
- Ability to perform with minimal daily supervision.
- Knowledge and/ or experience working with cleaning equipment and chemicals
- Must be proactive in support of the Church and Parish purpose, goals, policies and programs.
Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent is required.
- The applicant should possess combination of education, training and/ or experience to effectively perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job.
Physical Demands:
- Spend 80-90% of work time standing/ squatting/ lifting/ kneeling doing a wide variety of moderate physical activity both indoors and outdoors.
- The position requires the lifting of tools, equipment or material weighing up to 30 lbs. as necessary.
- Use of ladders and climbing up to 30 feet high will be required to maintain facilities when necessary.
- Required to lift or carry furniture, equipment, and supplies
- Required to maintain composure and avoid inappropriate displays of anger
- Required to perform strenuous walking, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing, climbing, twisting, grasping, and reaching overhead
- Required to hear, see, and speak on a daily basis
- Required to work with chemicals, exposure to dust, and slippery and uneven walking surfaces
- Required to work in various climate conditions
