ABOUT THE ROLE:
Under supervision of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor, is responsible for performing journeyman level automotive/heavy equipment mechanics and welding.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for general labor duties on Road and Bridge projects including but not limited to asphalt patching, mowing, culvert bed preparation, snow removal, gravel, and paved roadway maintenance, etc.
- Responsible for preventive maintenance and upkeep of equipment.
- Responsible for operating power tools, trucks, motor graders, front-end loaders, bulldozers, and other heavy equipment in a safe manner.
- Act as Team Lead (Straw Boss) on small, temporary crews as assigned by supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Participates with other maintenance personnel to perform general labor duties using hand tools including but not limited to shovels, rakes, posthole diggers, brooms, scrapers, etc.
- Participates in asphalt patching and preparing culvert beds.
- Place traffic control signs and devices, performing flagging duties as required.
- Operate jackhammers, air compressors, mechanical tampers, power saws, hydraulic drivers, and similar equipment.
- Operate side dump, belly dump, and read dump trucks hauling maintenance materials.
- Operate heavy equipment such as motor graders, front end loaders, bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, and trucks of all types.
- Operate asphalt related equipment, rollers, and other equipment associated with road and bridge maintenance.
- Performs related work as required including repair, cleaning, and maintenance of vehicles.
- Conduct snow removal and sanding/traction material applications as needed.
- Perform show and grounds maintenance as required, including mowing, and weed eating.
- Generate detailed daily timecards, material, and work reports.
- Performs other duties as required and assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Observe established safety practices and procedures when working with tools and equipment.
- Ensure equipment is in good operating condition by adjusting and performing routine maintenance as operating results and conditions require.
- Create a positive and productive work atmosphere by communicating and maintaining a professional manner with supervisors, employees, and the public.
- Prepare daily work reports and record equipment maintenance activities.
Requirements
- Must be high school graduate or GED certified, 18 years of age or above, and have the ability to read and write.
- Must possess and retain a CDL Class A driver’s license with N. endorsement without the air brake restrictions, as issued by the Driver’s License Division of the State of North Dakota, with no serious driving convictions, based on established department criteria.
- Preferably have two or more years’ experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker I or other construction related work using all the essential skills and equipment needed in this position.
- Must live within an approximate 60-minutes response time to the assigned shop.
- Candidates must successfully complete a standard background and criminal record check along with an alcohol and controlled substance test and physical exam. Costs associated with these exams will be paid for by the County
- Candidates must already be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. Burleigh County does not provide visa sponsorship.
