Description

Woerner Agribusiness, a family-owned agribusiness company headquartered in Foley, Alabama, is currently seeking an experienced and dedicated Payroll/ Human Resources Manager to join our team. The Payroll/Human Resources Manager will manage the day-to-day payroll and HR administration for all departments within the company, including the farms located in Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana; the three landscape supply retail stores; the transportation department; and the corporate office.


Job Summary:

This is a hands-on position. The Payroll/HR Manager will personally process payroll, resolve payroll and timekeeping issues, maintain compliant employee records, administer employee benefits, oversee workers' compensation and safety administration, and manage HR and compliance deadlines with limited supervision.  This position requires strong ownership and follow-through, with responsibility for seeing issues and assigned tasks through to completion.


Our workforce includes more than 100 employees across Alabama, Florida and Louisiana and includes agricultural, retail, corporate, and transportation employees.


Duties/Responsibilities:

The Payroll/HR Manager will personally manage the biweekly payroll process from beginning through final review, including reviewing timecards, identifying and correcting payroll discrepancies, processing employee changes, deductions, garnishments, and ensuring payroll is accurate and completed on schedule. 


The position's primary day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Payroll and electronic timekeeping administration
  • New-hire onboarding and employee record maintenance
  • I-9 and E-verify compliance
  • H-2A employee/payroll administration and compliance
  • Employee benefits enrollment, changes, terminations, eligibility, and required notices
  • Administration of employee leave and accommodation requirements, including FMLA and ADA, as applicable
  • Supporting compliance with ERISA, COBRA, ACA and other applicable employee benefit laws and reporting requirements
  • Workers' compensation claims and follow-up
  • OSHA recordkeeping and required safety documentation
  • Recruiting, candidate screening, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding
  • Employee relations, disciplinary documentation, investigations, and terminations
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and local payroll, wage-and-hour, and employment, leave, and employment benefit laws and regulations, as well as company HR policies
  • Unemployment and other employment related documentation
  • Coordination with payroll, benefits, insurance and other third-party vendors
  • Main point of contact for Benefits and Risk/Liability insurance brokers
  • Providing support and guidance to management and other staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as providing reasonable accommodations, investigating allegations of wrongdoing, and terminations. 
  • Maintaining accurate records, monitoring deadlines, and following outstanding matters through to completion
  • Providing records and documentation for payroll, benefits, workers' compensation, insurance, and other audits
  • Staying current on regulatory changes, trends, and best practices related to payroll, HR, employee benefits, safety, and employment law
  • Identifying and recommending updates to payroll processing software, systems, and procedures.
  • Overseeing the company safety program and ensuring all employees complete required and proper trainings on time
  • Centralized purchasing of office supplies
  • Performing other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Required Experience/ Abilities:

  • At least 3 years of hands-on payroll processing experience 
  • Extensive knowledge of the payroll function including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Hands-on HR administration experience.
  • Experience administering employee benefits, workers' compensation, FMLA/leave, I-9/E-Verify, and other HR compliance functions preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficient with payroll software or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS and talent management systems.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to company locations in Alabama, Florida and Louisiana, and also attend domestic safety/risk control workshops as needed.

Paylocity experience is strongly preferred.


Experience with multi-state payroll, H-2A workers, agricultural employers, workers' compensation, OSHA, employee benefits administration or work-release programs is highly desirable.


Education and Experience:

  •  Bachelor's or associate degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field is preferred but not required. Equivalent relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of formal education 


Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
