FLSA Status: Exempt

Compensation: $75/day, includes room and board

During the schoolyear, Camp Fire works in partnership with dozens of schools in the Metro Area. During the summer months, we offer summer camps in the Portland metro area and at our beautiful 552-acre camp, Camp Namanu, bordered by the vibrant Sandy River and presided over by century old trees. Position Overview:

This position is responsible for supervising the senior unit staff serving 7th-12th grade campers, in addition to planning, facilitating, and supporting camp from pre-camp training through the cessation of the camping session in coordination with the management team.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. This role will come in contact with campers, families, visitors, vendors and employees. Each of these persons may have visible and invisible qualities that makes that person unique. This includes race, gender, age, sexuality, ability, religion, national origin, gender identity, and other identities. This role requires sustaining an inclusive and equitable learning and working environments by having respectful and considerate behavior, thoughtful and constructive speech to all.
  2. Schedule and lead regular observation time, check-ins, and team meetings with direct reports. Provide written and verbal feedback to direct reports and support them in their professional growth.
  3. Assist Camp Director and management team with planning and facilitation of pre-camp set-up and training, Covid-19 safety protocols, daily staff meetings, weekly clean-up, end-of-summer shut down, and other management tasks as needed.
  4. Support program goals and behavior management systems for senior units. Ensure program uses best youth development practices and safety procedures.


Job Duties:

  • Displays excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers, volunteers, parents, and contractors; including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
  • Supervise, evaluate, observe, and provide support to junior unit coordinators including covering time-off and being secondary support to junior unit counselors.
  • Provide behavior management coaching and support for unit coordinators and counselors.
  • Occasional travel to Sandy, Gresham, and Portland for business and medical trips, as necessary.
  • Maintain staff performance record including evaluations, performance issue documentation, and other records as needed.
  • Assists with individual, cabin, unit, and all camp activities.
  • Learn, teach, and lead camp songs, games, and team-builders.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Expectations for All Camp Staff:

  • Abide and apply the personnel and program policies of the camp.
  • Ensure and maintain the cleanliness of camp facilities, equipment, and grounds including Covid-19 safety protocols, weekly and end-of-summer cleaning and pack-up.
  • Observe good health habits, including sufficient sleep, good hygiene, reasonable eating habits and cooperation with the Medical Staff and Camp Director in case of illness.
  • Maintain punctual, regular and predictable attendance.
  • Attend pre-camp training and regular on-site staff meetings throughout the summer
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Respectfully takes direction from supervisor.
  • Support the mission, purpose and leadership of Camp Fire and projects a positive image of Camp Fire.
  • Follow all safety guidelines including the completion of accident/incident reports as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervise four senior unit coordinators: Kiwanis, Pioneer, Balagan, and Gears. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Responsibilities may include interviewing and hiring as needed.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Language Skills:

Ability to analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to assemble reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


Computer Skills:

Job requires some specialized computer skills. Must be adept at using various applications including database, spreadsheet, report writing, project management, word processing, communication by e-mail and using scheduling software.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to assess problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and seek supervisory support when necessary. Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions. Ability to manage several abstract and concrete variables.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

This position requires a valid Oregon Food Handler’s card, First Aid & CPR certification and completion of Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse online training.

Physical Demands:

The employee must frequently move up to 25 pounds and occasionally move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to traverse varied terrain over the 60 acres of main camp, be stationary for prolonged periods, gather supplies from various heights and locations. In compliance with covid-19 protocols, employees are asked to wear a face mask when not actively consuming food/beverage.


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions 95% of the time. The employee may be occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and work in high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with occasional periods of excessive noise (i.e. meal times, talent show).
