About the College and Center for Eye Care
The New England College of Optometry prepares the next generation of eye care providers, educators, and innovators through a rigorous curriculum and extensive clinical experience. Located in the heart of Boston, NECO is a small, independent graduate institution that currently enrolls students from 34 states and 8 countries.
The Assistant Director of Financial Aid will report to the Director of Financial Aid and is a staff member of the Business Office Unit at NECO. This position serves as a bridge between students’ financial needs and their educational goals while assuming the responsibility of equitably awarding institutional, federal, and state funding.
- Counsel and advise students about financial aid eligibility, application procedures, costs, billing and indebtedness.
- Assist the Director with timely review, processing, and notification of student financial assistance applications.
- Provides student-focused customer service. Utilizes individual appointments, group presentations, email, phone contact and other web tools as appropriate to educate constituents on student financial assistance.
- Perform need analysis, verify information reported on FAFSA to determine eligibility and request additional documentation as needed.
- Import ISIR data on a daily basis and submit ISIR corrections to the Department of Education.
- Ensure that aid is packaged and disbursed to students’ accounts in the Business Office.
- Maintain compliance with all federal regulations and internal policies and procedures.
- Perform monthly reconciliation with the Business Office.
- Report enrollment status and maintain records in the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) for individual students.
- Manage federal loan origination and disbursement reporting to COD via electronic processes.
- Assist with internal and external scholarship announcements and processing.
- Certify and process private loans, Canadian loans and VA benefits.
- Present at special events, such as Orientation, Admissions Interview Day, Housing Fair and Commencement.
- Coordinate and present at multiple Financial Literacy sessions.
- Assist in the administration of the College’s student employment program.
- Perform other related duties as required by the position or as assigned by the Director.
Skills/Knowledge Essential for Successful Performance
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written are also required.
- Must have excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
- Must be a highly motivated, independent worker with attention to detail, initiative and good problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to work with populations that represent a variety of backgrounds, varying levels of financial need, and express sensitivity toward the experience of applying for student aid Comprehension, interpretation, and application of federal and college policies related to financial aid. Must show commitment to a team and the goals of the department.
- Knowledge of the Financial Aid automated systems including PowerFaids and other related financial aid software.
- A thorough working knowledge of computer systems and the ability and willingness to learn new systems/processes is required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint required
- Ability to interpret and explain regulatory information related to the financial aid process.
- Responsible for the timely and accurate disbursement of all student aid.
- Time management; ability to cope with multiple interruptions and work under pressure of deadlines; attention to detail
- Participate in regular training and professional organizations to keep abreast of new information and program changes to be implemented
- Perform other duties as assigned
A Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of financial aid work experience are required, and knowledge of PowerFaids is helpful. Candidates must possess excellent oral and written communication and organization skills, be able to manage several tasks at once, and assist other staff as needed. Attention to detail and quick responsiveness to students and other College personnel are imperative.
