POSITION TITLE: Recreational Therapist

DEPARTMENT: Allied Therapy

JOB SUMMARY

Plans, organizes, and directs medically approved recreation therapy programming for severely emotionally disturbed children and adolescents.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Completes an assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation process for each patient with documentation.

• Develops patient goals/objectives and tracks progress.

• Attends interdisciplinary rounds and other meetings to report on patient progress and concerns.

• Directs and organizes active treatment offered in a group setting that based on the specific needs of the patient by developing creative and instructive groups that are focused on: character development, leisure education, wellness, symptom management, and coping skills.

· Maintains current certifications and knowledge of policies and procedures for directing sessions on the ropes course, in the pool area, in the garden and on therapeutic outings. 

· Communicates effectively with nursing staff before and after each session to ensure patient safety. 

· Collaborates with other Recreational Therapists and Activities Assistants to develop programming.

• Ability to perform recreation therapy assessments, treatment plans and interventions, progress notes and special recreation therapy and performance improvement assignments as delegated.

• Demonstrates the ability to identify and report safety hazards in a timely manner. 

• Utilize standard precautions during patient care. 

• Is prepared for all emergencies, knows the codes and proper procedures to respond appropriately. 

• Uses protocol for allowing access to the building for visitors and does not allow unauthorized individuals inside. 

• Creates and utilizes personal safety and self-care plans to manage emotions. 

• Maintaining a pleasant demeanor with co-workers, supervisors, and others with whom in contact. Openly praises co-worker’s accomplishments. Greets other employees and welcomes new employees.

• Attends employee forums, team meetings, and Allied Therapy meetings to stay informed. 

• Is respectful and direct by going to the source to mitigate triangulation, considers the audience, tolerates expression or emotion and respects differing viewpoints. 

• Learns and applies basic knowledge of mental illness in all relationships with patients.

• Learns and applies therapeutic communication skills.

• Maintains accountability by keeping a regular, predictable, and reliable attendance at work, and cleaning up all utilized spaces. 

• Demonstrates the ability to utilize physical intervention with violent and out of control patients.

Requirements

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Certification in Recreational Therapy through the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation (NCTRC). Must have valid and current Montana driver’s license. Must obtain shallow water lifeguard certification and attend Youth Mental Health First Aid and CPI training during probationary period of employment. Position requires Criminal Records Background Check and drug test.
