A Summer Camp Belayer is a seasonal part-time position for Momentum Summer Camps. Belayers act as an extra set of hands, belaying campers throughout the day.
Belayers help to increase the number of climbs each camper gets during camp, adding value, as campers are not quite old enough to belay for themselves.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS
Distribution of focus:
This 2+ hr./week position will focus on belaying weekly summer camps while creating a safe, fun, and exciting experience for all campers.
Administration
- Create a fun and exciting environment for campers to explore the vertical world of climbing
- Ensure that campers are using rental or personal gear per gym policies and manufacturer specifications
- Belay campers according to Momentum’s 5 Point Belay Policy
Customer Service and Facility Obligations
- Ability to put the immediate needs of campers first at all times
- Ability to command respect, enforce safe climbing practices, recognize unsafe conditions, and discuss any concerns with fellow staff and campers in a professional manner
- Enforce Momentum policies in a friendly, patient, and respectful manner
Weekly Recurring Tasks
- Keep camp engaging and fun for all campers with active participation
- Gain awareness of each camper’s skill levels and needs
- 2+ hours per week from June 2nd - August 15th
COMPENSATION, BENEFITS, AND PERKS
- $13.00/hour
- Free membership to all Momentum climbing facilities.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Experienced in the PBUS method of belaying
- Ability to work with a large group of kids, ages 4-11
- Experience in coaching, programming, and facilitating is a plus, but not required
ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Comfortable working in a loud, environment regularly
- Comfortable speaking in front of and providing instruction to large groups
- Be comfortable working at height, moving up and down a climbing wall
- Continuously stand and walk on unstable and uneven surfaces for long periods.
- Able to repeatedly lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs of weight regularly.
- Able to balance, kneel, pull, push, and grasp objects as needed.
- Have the visual acuity to assess details such as harness buckles, knots, and belay technique.
