A. Instructional

1. Becomes very familiar with the classroom academic curriculum

2. Works with students on an individual or small group basis in any academic area the teacher deems necessary

3. Assists the teacher during whole group instruction and seatwork time by moving from child to child to help each one stay on task 

4. Tutors one or more students in a specific subject skill to help them gain understanding and mastery

5. On occasion, teaches a lesson to the entire class

6. Helps monitor classroom behavior


B. Routine Classroom Procedures

The primary task of an assistant is to work with the students academically in a group or on an individual basis, and to handle routine class procedures as time allows. 

1. Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First Grade daily or weekly duties may include the following:

a. Assists on the playground before school, during dismissal and at recess time

b. Assists at restroom time

c. Helps keep the room tidy and the materials organized

d. Maintains grade level storage cabinets 

e. Collects and records notes and money each morning

f. Records daily attendance

g. Helps at snack time with milk, opening drinks, and assisting with cleaning tables or desks after snack

h. Sorts papers that have been graded and organize them to go home weekly

i. Assists with distributing work papers to students

j. Assists with erasing and cleaning boards

k. Helps put materials away and prepare new materials for the next day

l. Prints names on all students’ papers as appropriate

m. Pulls papers out of workbooks in advance of use

n. Makes worksheets and/or copies them for seat work

o. Files all new worksheets

p. Assists in putting up bulletin boards

q. Prepares materials for projects

r. Assists with “Band-Aid” nursing duties

s. Assists with making chapel awards

t. Assists with other classroom procedures as needed


2. Second through Fifth Grade Assistant duties will be determined each week by the teacher and may include the following:

a. Makes chapel awards

b. Sorts and staples work papers and prepares weekly paper packets to send home

c. Prepares materials for projects

d. Assists in putting up bulletin boards

e. Runs copies of materials as needed

f. Files papers

g. Grades papers that are objective (grading papers that are subjective are the teacher’s responsibility)

h. Assists in the classroom with students when asked by the teacher, especially during math and/or reading groups

i. Assists with other tasks as needed

j. Assists with before school, recess and dismissal duties

Requirements

  

A. The Classroom Assistant supports and advances the mission of FCS by helping in various ways as directed by the Classroom Teacher, with the students in the content areas, and with general classroom procedures, as time allows and as directed by the teacher; reports to the Principal.


B. The Classroom Assistant should have the following qualifications:

1. Committed Christian with a close personal walk with the Lord, maintained through personal routines (such as prayer and reading the Bible) and in the school setting (through regular participation in Prayer and Share devotional times and other spiritual development)

2. Possesses Christian character qualities to serve as a role model for young people and readiness to share faith in Christ with students as part of our school’s mission

3. Regular in attendance at an evangelical Protestant church

4. Commitment to a biblical lifestyle, not promoting or engaging in premarital, extramarital, transgender, or homosexual behavior

5. If married, a solid commitment based on Mark 10:9 and positive marital relationship

6. Strong commitment to Christian education

7. Supports an orderly learning atmosphere

8. Enthusiastic, sensitive, loving rapport with students, openness with parents and staff

9. Well organized, diligent, creative

10. Ability to carry out physical requirements related to the job and building environment, such as (but not limited to) climbing stairs, riding the bus on field trips and, supervising students both out-of-doors and indoors

11. Teachable, servant spirit
